alistair maclean was one of the popular scottish novelists who used to write suspense and adventure novels. his writing career includes a total of 29 best-selling novels, which helped him to be recognized among the leading writers of his time. Many of the popular novels written by Maclean have been adapted into famous movies. Some of them include Navarone Canyons, Where Eagles Dare, Ice Station Zebra, etc. He has also written a couple of novels under the pseudonym Ian Stuart. Maclean was born on April 21, 1922 in Shettleston, Glasgow, Scotland and passed away on February 2, 1987 in Munich, Germany at the age of 64. At the time of his birth, Maclean’s father was working as a pastor at the Church of Scotland. as a child he studied English as a second language, his mother tongue being Scottish Gaelic. After being born in Glasgow, author Maclean spent most of his childhood and growing up years in Daviot, which is 10 miles south of Inverness. Maclean had three other brothers, with whom he grew up.
In 1941, Maclean joined the Royal Navy and served in World War II. he started out as an ordinary seaman and later became a skilled seaman and then a noted torpedo operator. According to his first mission, he was assigned to duty off the coast of Scotland and England on the ship PS Bournemouth Queen. For the next 4 years, Maclean served different missions and changed several ships. he also traveled to various countries during this time and was wounded on a few occasions during battles. After serving for a period of 5 years during World War II, Maclean was relieved of his duty in the Royal Navy in the year 1946. Following this, he decided to study English at the University of Glasgow, eventually graduating in the year 1953. The first job he took after graduation was as a school teacher at an elementary school in Rutherglen. During his college days, author Maclean had started writing short stories to earn some extra income. he even won a writing contest in 1954 for his maritime history entitled ‘dileas’. Seeing his excellent writing skills, Collins Publishing asked him to write a sample novel for them.

maclean responded with the bestselling novel ‘hms ulysses’, which was based on his experiences during the second world war. The novel also included some insights from his brother named Ian, who had served as a master seaman during the war. After the immense success of the novel, Maclean had the opportunity to be recognized as a talented writer and from then on he continued to spend all his time writing about war stories, adventure novels, spy stories, etc. In the early 1960s, he published a couple of novels under the pseudonym Ian Stuart to prove to critics that the popularity of his novels was not due to their original name on the cover but to their content. Although both books sold fairly well, author Alistair Maclean made no attempt to make any changes to his writing style. Due to this, fans of him could easily recognize him behind his Scottish pseudonym. In the following years, his books began to sell so well that he had to move to Switzerland to attempt tax exile. Between 1963 and 1966, Maclean had to stop writing to focus on setting up his hotel business in London. later, when he returned to writing, his books were not as well received compared to his earlier publications. Therefore, in a desperate attempt to keep up with the passing of time, Maclean began experimenting with unduly unlikely stories. he too had become an alcoholic and constantly struggled with his drinking habits. Finally, the author Maclean died in 1987 in Munich. His body was buried in Celigny, Switzerland, next to the grave of Richard Burton. Maclean had been married twice in his life and had a couple of children by his first wife. he too had adopted a third child later. The University of Glasgow awarded author Maclean an Honorary Doctorate of Letters in 1983.

The first novel in the series was published under the title ‘The Guns of Navarone’. It was published by Fawcett Book Publishing in the year 1957. The plot of this novel shows that a whole Navy team had tried to defeat the Navarone cannons, but they were unable to succeed in their attempts. they attacked on a large scale to push back the marine team. to try one more time, the army decided to send a team of only 5 men, all of them specialists in handling deadly situations. this novel turned out to be a classic thriller and was very well received by readers all over the world. the success of this novel allowed it to be adapted into a movie of the same name.
The second novel in the series by author Alistair Maclean was published under the title ‘Force 10 from Navarone’. It was launched in the year 1968 by the Fontana book publisher. The plot of this novel serves as an exciting sequel to the successful first novel in the series. it also depicts a WWII adventure, just like the previous novel. In the opening sequence of this novel’s plot, it is shown that the Navarone cannons were silenced by the team of 5 braves. but, they had no time to rest. Just before the death of the last sounds of popular weapons, the team of Andrea, Keith Mallory and Dusty Miller were asked to travel with their parachutes in the war-torn regions of Yugoslavia. they were asked to rescue a team of partisans and carry out a secret mission. they come to know that the mission is very deadly and must be hidden even from their allies. This novel was also very liked by the readers and was appreciated by the fans of the author Alistair Maclean all over the world. this gave him a lot of confidence to write many more exciting novels in his successful career as a writer.
