Unfortunate news: Apple will no longer offer its photo printing services, which allowed you to create and order physical prints, cards, calendars, and books from within photos on your Mac. If you’re creating such a project right now, be sure to place your order before September 30, 2018. After that, Apple directs users to download a Photos Project extension from the Mac App Store. you’ll see this dialog every time you click on a project in photos.

When you click the open app store button, photos opens the app store app and displays the available photo project extensions. (if you need to open this mac app store screen manually, search appex: com.apple.photo-project). most of these extensions are free as they will make your money when you order projects.
These extensions don’t exactly replace apple projects, so let’s take a quick look at what they offer.
mimeo photos
The extension that comes closest to providing the same products and features as Apple Print Projects is Mimeo Photos, which can create cards, calendars, and books. offers a wide range of themes.

motif is a lot like mimeo photos, which also lets you create cards, calendars, and books with curated photos, and it comes from rr donnelley, formerly apple’s partner for print projects. It doesn’t offer as many themes or options as mimeo photos, but it does have a better interface.
shutter
While the popular shutterfly photography service’s website lets you go beyond the basics to put your photos on a host of objects, such as pillows, candles, and placemats, the company’s photo extension is limited to photo albums. happily, it offers quite a few different sizes and bindings, and numerous themes for each.
fujifilm prints & gifts
fujifilm prints & The gifts extension allows you to order prints, cards, wall art, mugs, magnets, t-shirts, puzzles, iphone cases and much more. however, it has a non-standard interface (basically the company’s website), and every time we changed the extension, it would crash and forget which photo we had selected.
mpix
although mpix seems to focus on prints, if you scroll down the list of projects, the final option is to browse mpix, which offers more possibilities, including photo albums, calendars, collages, art prints, posters, key chains, etc. magnets, playing cards and business cards. Confusingly, with some of these elements, the photos act as nothing more than a window to the mpix website, with no knowledge of which photos you have selected.

white wall
whitewall focuses entirely on prints, with high-quality options for exotic papers and options for mounting and framing. supported sizes range from 8″ x 6″ to 48″ x 36″. Unfortunately, the prices for the white wall seemed high (a framed photo was $130-$530, depending on size), and once you select a particular paper or frame option, there’s no way to try another with the same frame. photo without starting another project.
wix
unlike all the others, the wix extension doesn’t put photos on the physical products at all. instead, it is designed to create screen photo albums for websites designed with the wix service. as such, it’s potentially extremely useful for wix users, but not for everyone else.
it’s a shame that apple is getting out of the print project business, as the interfaces of these extensions tend not to be as good as apple’s. but if you like to make a calendar every year, you’ll probably do fine with photos or mimeo motifs, and the rest of the extensions extend the photo printing capabilities greatly.
Social Media: Starting September 30, you won’t be able to order Apple prints, cards, calendars, or books in photos. but several extensions do most of what apple did, and others go much further!
