Barbara, however, was not always a writer. She studied English at the University of Pennsylvania and shortly after graduating, she began a career that apparently had nothing to do with literature. although she always had a passion for writing, in her previous life it was just a hobby of hers. Her previous profession involved a couple of successful startups in the EdTech industry, she co-founded these two startups and served as COO for both. One of these startups was sold to the Blackboard Corporation which produces online learning tools for schools across the country. Eventually, Barbara pursued her hobby more vehemently and in 2010, her first novel was published. It was called the death of an ambitious woman who follows the exploits of an interim police chief investigating the murder of a local businesswoman. The story takes place in a Boston suburb and is a gripping tale of murder and the fulfillment of personal goals. Ruth Murphy is the main character of the story who, in essence, has something to prove. the interim police chief is trying to prove her worth to the department by taking on a very complex case that ends up generating multiple suspects. the story presents an interesting juxtaposition of characters and traits. The late Tracy Kendall who dies in a car accident is very similar in nature to Ruth Murphy. both are motivated and goal-oriented women. When the rest of the department urges Murphy to drop the case, she is forced to investigate the “car accident” further, as she sees too much of herself in the victim. As the investigation unfolds, Murphy finds himself beset by puzzling suspects and a cop who keeps getting in her way. is a gripping and straightforward police mystery that was well received by readers. Death of an Ambitious Woman is currently rated 4.1 stars (out of 5) on goodreads.com. It was Barbara Ross’s first success as a mystery writer.

The first entry in Ross’s Maine Clambake mystery series was also a well-received mystery novel that kicked off the series in true New England style. I expected. the family business is hired to attend a wedding but something terrible happens: the best man of the wedding is found dead, hanging from the roof of the snowy house. An immediate investigation is launched, but suspicions mount on an old flame of Snowden’s. soon the plot turns into a tangled conflict of interest. Julia Snowden must find the culprit of the murder not only for the sake of justice but also for the livelihood of her family. the heroine, julia snowden grows in the process of the investigation; her learning more about herself than she expected by returning to her hometown. The story features well-developed characters and, as is the hallmark of any Barbara Ross mystery, great insight into the culture of the North Atlantic Coast. In addition to being a murder mystery, coming of age, and somewhat of a cute romance novel, the book also emphasizes the bond of a close family and the relationships that form such a unit.
