I’ve been coloring for almost a year! adult coloring has been all the rage for a while and I’m still in love with it. On any normal day you can find me coloring some free coloring pages or using my adult coloring books. It’s a really relaxing hobby, and I’m so glad he’s back at it again.
Because I’m so obsessed, I get a few questions about it quite often, and one of them is “what are the best colored pencils for coloring books?” Well, I’m here to help you!

These are my top five picks for good colored pencils that will give you the results you want. By “results” I mean colors that are great, easy to hold, easy to use, and don’t fall apart on the page.
the big news? I’m choosing them based on real tests I’ve done myself! none of these brands paid me or sent me anything for free. This is my 100% honest opinion
I have all of these pencil sets (and many more) and have tried them all. Of the colored pencils I tried, these were the top five I chose. these are my thoughts, and here is my ranking below from 1 to 5.
1. crayola twistable colored pencils
(Starting at $6 for a pack of 12): I bought my set online and it includes 30 pencils.
Pros: These adult colored pencils have a great color palette; no sharpening required, just twist! the color goes on smoothly and wax-like, somewhere between a crayon and a pencil. I love the feeling.
cons: no color labels! you don’t think labeling colors is important until you don’t have them; some of the colors look the same, so it was hard for me to remember what I used.
Overall: I’m pretty much in love with these pencils. I’ll be honest: I love two big things about them: 1) how the color is applied to the page and how smooth it is, and 2) how you don’t have to sharpen them.

Having said that, sometimes it’s hard to get a sharp point for detail areas. but for me, if you want a good game at a reasonable price, this is a great option.
2. pentel arts colored pencils
(about $3 to start): This set includes 24 colored pencils; I think this is the only size game you can buy from them.
pros: pencil barrels are hexagonal, making them easy to hold; the colors go on soft and waxy just the way I love it; they are easy to mix.
Cons: The only bad thing I can say is that there are not enough colors. I wish Pentel had made some bigger games too.
Overall: I love this outfit! these are the best cheap colored pencils for adults. your only limitation will be the colors available. so whether or not I recommend it depends on your color needs.
I like it better than the cheaper sets I’ve tried; I’m sad I can’t get it in a wider range of colors or this would be my favorite set.
3. prismacolor premier colored pencils
(Starting at around $19.99) – Prismacolor pencils aren’t cheap, but I opted for the 72-count set anyway. these come in a variety of sizes.
pros: what can I say about the prismacolors except that they are amazing? easy to layer, go on smoothly. . . they roll over the markers fine and the markers roll over them fine.
Cons: To me, Prismacolors are like the copic markers of the pencil world. They are expensive. That said, the quality is there! I felt like I had to buy a pretty big set to get all the colors I wanted.
Overall: It’s hard to complain about prismacolors – they really are the best colored pencils, especially when it comes to coloring for adults. The price is really the only thing discouraging.
In terms of pencils, these are the best quality as far as I’m concerned. I have a price limit on what I’m willing to spend on pencils on a regular basis, so I have a set of these, but I don’t use them all the time!
4. koh-i-noor tri-tone

($15.59 and up): What is a tri-tone pencil? I had no idea when I bought a set of 12! You can also buy these adult colored pencils in a set of 24.
pros: produces very interesting colors, great fun to experiment with! includes a smudger pencil.
Cons: You will still need a basic set with different basic colors than this set because they are all literally as described: three colors in each pencil tip.
overall: man, I love these. If you’re serious about coloring adults and have a birthday or other holiday coming up, ask about tri-tones. they are so funny. color effects like no other. . . but they can’t be your only outfit (unless you’re crazy about your coloring!).
5. sargent art colored pencils
($6.99 for 12 and up) – My colored pencil set included 24 pencils at a great price!
pros: colors are vibrant; pencils are easy to hold; great value for the number of pencils.
cons: almost none! there is a little bit of dust coming off the pencil but unlike others it was easy to clean without leaving any smudges.
Overall: As far as wooden pencils you have to sharpen, these were my favorites! actually someone recommended them to me on instagram and said she had arthritis and they were comfortable for her so i had to buy them. I agree; they are easy to hold. you can’t go wrong with sargent adult colored pencils.
