Marking Time: Art in the Age of Mass Incarceration by Nicole R. Fleetwood

from the editor: “more than 2 million people are currently behind bars in the united states. Imprisonment not only separates the incarcerated from their families and communities, it also exposes them to shocking levels of deprivation and abuse and subjects them to the arbitrary cruelties of the criminal justice system. However, as Nicole Fleetwood reveals, America’s prisons are full of art. Despite the isolation and degradation they experience, those incarcerated are forced to assert their humanity in the face of a system that dehumanizes them.

“Based on interviews with current and past incarcerated artists, prison visits, and the author’s own family experiences with the penal system, Marking Time shows how those incarcerated turn ordinary objects into elaborate works of art. Working with scarce supplies and in the harshest of conditions, including solitary confinement, these artists find ways to resist the brutality and depravity that prisons breed. The impact of his art, notes Fleetwood, can be felt far beyond the prison walls. His bold works, many of which are published for the first time in this volume, have opened up new possibilities in American art.”

Many of these places are where they were killed or found the bodies of activists, mill workers, shopkeepers, sharecroppers, children and adolescents, victims of racist violence. The images of these places are intermingled with oral histories of the victims’ families and investigative journalists, as well as pages from newspapers and fbi files and other ephemera.

“with road through midnight, the result of nearly a decade of research and fieldwork, ingram unlocks powerful and complex histories to recast these common landscapes as sites of both memory and resistance and transforms the way we think about what has happened and what is happening now, as the fight for civil rights continues and the commemoration has become the literal issue of a contested cultural and social terrain.”
