An English author with a distinctively more British tone, he has been crafting his unique brand of whodunit for some time now. Having built some of the most beloved series of all time, especially with his ever recognizable Inspector Morse of his, he is a name to be reckoned with in the world of literature. with its attempt to progress the genre in a more cerebral direction, it is appreciated both critically and commercially.

early years and personal life

Raised in Stamford, Lincolnshire, Colin Dexter was born on September 29, 1930. This was to be the area that provided much of his inspiration, as he used much of it to build on the lives of his characters. here where he would also receive much of his education leading to his adult life. Attending public school at Stamford School, Dexter went on to take his place in the “Royal Corps of Signals” where he completed his national service. He later attended Christ’s College in Cambridge, where he read the classics. after graduating in 1953, he received an honorary master’s degree in 1958.

he later began teaching in the east midlands, where he worked at wyggeston school in leicester as an assistant teacher of classics. After this, he went to Loughborough Grammar School before going on to Corby Grammar School in Northamptonshire, where he worked as Head Teacher of Classics. This teaching career lasted from 1954 to 1966 where he was cut short after the appearance of deafness. It was in 1956 that he too would marry his wife Dorothy Cooper. It was later, in 1972, that he began writing his mystery novels for which he would become famous.

writing the first few paragraphs on a family vacation, he began to formulate a story that was to be his first crime novel ‘the last bus to woodstock’, which was initially published in 1975. this was the first in what was thirteen’ The Inspector Morse novels, which eventually spawned their own television series, as well as an entire franchise. Mirroring the tastes of Dexter himself, Morse had a penchant for Cryptic and Wagner crossword puzzles, along with draft beer and English literature. dexter was going to spend the next part of his life building and formulating this character.

With a collection of awards for his contribution to the crime novel genre, his influence within the field is second to none. Having been awarded two “Silver Daggers” by the Crime Writers Association for his novel “Service to All the Dead” in 1979, his talent is undeniable. later this would be further reinforced with more awards for his other novels. With a long-running television series becoming a regular fixture, Morse’s character has become an institution with a worldwide following. Upholding this legacy, Dexter has many titles to come and shows no signs of stopping any time soon as he will continue to write for the foreseeable future.

Then there’s married Bernard Crowther who drove two women the night of the murder, all while he was on his way to have an affair with his mistress. Will Inspector Morse be able to put the pieces together, find the suspect, and shed some light on this tragedy? Will he be able to find out who he was in time or might the killer try to strike again to cover his tracks? what happened to those two girls that particular night that they couldn’t catch the last bus to woodstock?

Being the final novel in the Inspector Morse series, it was originally published in 1999 on September 15. Completing the saga of the now infamous detective, complete the entire series of thirteen books in all. In solving a final case, the famous inspector is forced to deal with an unsolved murder that he never managed to close.
