You are reading: Communication books for adults with aphasia

communication books: communication books for adults with aphasia can be in a grid format with relevant communication messages. There may be a few pages or many, but keep in mind that the more pages, the longer it will take to navigate. The most important thing is to include high-priority, relevant messages that support the necessary communication, and not just “standard” messages. There are many samples and templates that can be purchased or downloaded for adult communication books. these can be good to start with, but should be individualized as needed or as soon as possible. communication books can be text-based, symbol-based, or a combination. The most important part of developing communication books is to involve the person with aphasia in the planning and organization of the book. then it will be more meaningful and relevant, and therefore more likely to be used.

Communication Remnants: Remnants are objects, papers, or materials that remind someone of an event or experience. ticket stubs, maps, seeds, dried flowers, etc. can all serve as holdovers. these elements provide a visual and tactile way to share information and connect with others. students can help choose items from significant personal experiences to serve as reminders of stories to tell. holdover books can also be used to help with topic choice when selecting which story to “tell”. multiple holdovers about an experience allow for an ‘extended’ conversation about a topic. remnants can be fixed in a communication book on sheet protector pages, with hot glue on pages, pockets, etc.

Low-Tech Visual Scene Communication Books: Visual Scene Displays (VSDs) use photographs or images to represent events, people, actions, objects, and activities with words and messages around the scene or, if electronic, With hot spots showing the words or messages the visual scene screens can be used for communication books. these scenes are used as an interface for language and communication. the idea of visual scenes is to make them extremely relevant and meaningful to the user. See AAC for Aphasia: A Review of the Visual Scene Display Project by David Beukelman, Karen, Hux, Kristy Weissling, Aimee Dietz, and Miechelle Mckelvey for comprehensive information on visual display communication books.

four basic (but extremely important) considerations about the communication book:

  • customize the communication book for the user. it has to do with something a competent adult would want to do with them around town. size, style, color, material, etc. matter. everyone will have different priorities of “attractiveness.” it is worth the time and effort to include the person with aphasia in the decision-making process. We all know that if we don’t like something, we don’t want to be seen with it.
  • make sure messages, remnants, symbols convey meaningful information. if the vocabulary or information in the communication book is not what the user wants to talk about, there is no reason to use it. also consider vocabulary layout, symbols, holdovers for easy access, topic priority, etc.
  • make navigation through the book easy physically, linguistically, and cognitive.
  • remember to decide (assess) what type of communicator will use the communication book and develop strategies that go with that type of communication.

A few additional thoughts:

  • all of these types of communication books can enable partner-supported communication by helping to provide visual support for decision-making, providing a prompt for retrieval of stored messages, topic initiation, and storytelling of stories (aphasia and aac: improving communication in health care settings, or garrett, k. l., & lasker, j. p. (2007). aac and severe aphasia: improving communication across the recovery continuum Perspectives on Neurophysiology and Neurogenic Speech and Language Disorders, 17, 6-15.).
  • All of these types of communication books should be practiced in many meaningful communication situations.
  • all of these types of communication books need to be modeled and the person with aphasia needs to see that communication is a two-way street. when you model the use of visual strategies, they gain a better understanding and see what is expected.

We would love to see examples of communication books you use with people with aphasia.
