edith mary pargeter, popularly known by the pseudonym ellis peters, was born just before the start of world war i on september 28, 1913 in horsehay, shropshire, england. She was the daughter of Edmund Valentine, a clerk and timekeeper at a local blacksmith shop, and Edith Hordley Pargeter. Ellis was the last born in a family of three children. her older brother was named ellis, a name she later adopted as a pseudonym, while her sister, who preceded her, was named margaret.
The family lived in a small community dominated by hay mills and situated a short distance from Dawley in the heart of the East Shropshire coalfield. the family loved music and the children had been encouraged to start reading from an early age. the atmosphere at peters’ house was friendly, encouraging and vibrant. Her mother greatly influenced her life and that of her siblings, as the novelist once said.
ellis attended dawley church of england primary school in shropshire and later coalbrookdale secondary school for girls. when she was in primary school, she had to walk four times a day, to and from school, as there were no provisions for lunch at that time. her throughout school she showed interest in composition and art. she participated in various contests and competitions where she got a number of awards and certificates. While she was in high school, her special interest and passion for writing took notice and encouraged her and she eventually became a big part of her life.

As he neared the end of his time at Coalbrookdale, he took the Oxford local exam and passed, and later in 1931 he took the Oxford Higher exam. after leaving school, he stayed home to study for the executive division of the civil service. the contest for a place was excellent and, although he did very well on the written English test, he did not do so well in math. She was also in the 1930s when she worked as a pharmacy assistant and in the early 1940s she served in the Royal Navy Women’s Service. It was while she was in the Royal Naval Service that she began her writing career and her first books were published.

edith mary pargeter had welsh ancestry and this influenced much of her writing. many of her tales and books are set in wales and her borders, and others even have evidence of a welsh protagonist.
Beginning in the mid-1930s, Edith Mary Pargeter would write historical fiction and crime novels. she sometimes wrote using her real name and other times under various of her pseudonyms. she had written her first book when she was only 15 years old and still in school. this was sent to heinemann the publishers. Her first novel to be published was Hortensius, Friend of Nero, and this was before she was 20 years old. the book had been rejected for the first time, but in 1936 it was published. it was this first step toward her success that marked the beginning of her 60-year writing career in which she published more than 70 books. Between 1936 (when she first published it) and 1947, Edith is recorded as having written many books, including a wartime trilogy that raised her profile nationally.
In 1947, she and her brother visited Czechoslovakia in the brief period between the end of the war and the political changes resulting from the nation’s joining the Warsaw Pact. Like many others, Ella Edith Ella felt that the politicians of the pre-war country had let the people down. From what seemed like simple interest and sympathy for the people of Czechoslovakia, she turned into a lifelong interest in their country’s culture, language, and stories. she visited the area numerous times over the next 21 years. when she finished the war, she translated numerous volumes of prose and poetry from Czech and Slovak and continued to write her own fiction.

In 1951, he published his first detective book, Falled Into the Pit’, which featured George Felse (a policeman) and his family. the characters appeared in more books, including Death and the Merry Woman and The Rainbow’s End (1979). he used the name ellis peters in all the books written about felse family mysteries. In this series, the Felse family is caught up in the midst of serious crimes with George curled up with the task of unraveling the truth that will distinguish the guilty from the innocent.
In 1977, he began writing a series of crime novels set in and around 12th-century Benedictine Shrewsbury Abbey. The first book in the series was A Morbid Taste for Bones: A Medieval Detective Novel. in the book series, she combined a detailed depiction of medieval life with a crime investigation and a sub-romantic plot. the books enjoyed immense popularity. the sub-romantic subplot in some of his works gained a lot of prominence in the series he worked on. The main character, who is also the series’ detective, is the monk Cadfael, a former crusader who cares for the abbey’s garden. Some book titles in the series include Saint Peter’s Fair (1981), The Virgin on Ice (1982), Brother Haluin’s Confession (1988), A Corpse Too Much (1979), The Raven in the Foregate (1987 ), The Devil’s Novice (1984), and The Heretic’s Apprentice (1989). Most of the Cadfael mystery books were adapted for television with Derek Jacobi starring.
edith passed away at her home in madeley, shropshire having returned from hospital following a stroke. she was 82 years old when she died on october 14, 1995. in 1997, in an effort to honor his memory, a stained glass window depicting st. benedict at shrewsbury abbey.
