Top 10 First Day of School Books – A Teachable Teacher

Is there such a thing as the first day of school? the excitement and nerves for the new year are indescribable. I never start the year without a stack of books for the first day of school to see me through the day!

Going back to school is such a fun, stressful, and overwhelming time for everyone! parents, teachers, and students tend to feel nervous about something (although it can be different for everyone).

You are reading: First day of school books

Books help calm nerves, allow students to relax, and provide children with a shared experience.

I have a variety of books available to grab that first day. if we don’t reach everyone, that’s fine!

Some of these books are for specific lessons.

others are just for times when we need a break. this gives us a chance to get comfortable with our routines and also gives us a chance to get comfortable in what will soon be familiar surroundings.

my top 10 books for the first day of school

nervousness the first day

This book is a must read on the first day of school! I like to read it early in the morning that day so anyone feeling nervous knows they’re not alone.

You will see a man in this book trying to persuade someone to get ready for the first day of school. students may think that he is talking to his son or daughter, but it turns out that he is talking to his wife.

It’s the teacher who is nervous on the first day! I love that it flips the script so students who are feeling nervous know they’re not alone.

Fortunately, she meets wonderful people at school. This book is a great opportunity to share how you can make someone feel better, more comfortable, and happier when they’re feeling nervous, which also happens to be the perfect introduction to how to be a great friend.

I like to combine this book with “first day jitters” to show a student’s perspective. you can even make an anchor chart to compare and contrast sentiments if you have the time!

This book is a newer one on my list. it had to be included because if we are looking at different perspectives, how could we forget our school building? ?

students can identify with the way school feels while also being comfortable with the spaces of their own school building. this book is a perfect read before touring the building! students may even have empathy for the school building in a way they might not otherwise. It’s a win-win!

the hand that kisses

If there are children in your classroom who have never been to school before or who are having difficulty leaving their caregivers, this book is a must-read!

This sweet story is about a little raccoon named Chester who doesn’t want to leave his mom to go to school. (I bet we’ve all met a kid or two like that!)

chester’s mom puts him at ease in a way that will help put her kids at ease too. I like to hand out heart stickers for students to put on their hands. whenever they miss their caretaker, they can hug their decal.

the pigeon has to go to school

If your students are anything like mine, they love pigeons. not only is it super fun, it’s very relatable for our students.

There’s nothing like persuading my students to respond to a book the first time. they are so surprised that I want them to talk during a read aloud! #greatteacher

This new book is a must have for back to school! I can imagine pulling this off the shelf when we all need a break to laugh and build community on day one.

the day you start

First of all, be sure to read this sweet book to yourself before you read it to your class because it’s special and I might (I did!) cry.

It is a very important message to tell children from day one that everyone is different in the best way and very important in their classroom.

This book encourages children to connect with each other, even when they feel scared or alone. what an important message for all of us!

how to prepare your teacher

This book turns the tables. kids can tell the teacher how to prepare for all the things that are coming up this school year.

start with the first day, end with the last day, and share all the fun milestones in between. what a great preview to get your kids excited about what is to come this school year.

I love giving my students the opportunity to be leaders on the first day because that’s what I want them to be by the end of the year. Giving them this responsibility is empowering.

Preschool, Kindergarten, First Grade, and Second Grade, here we come! There is one of these books for each grade level by David J. Steinberg.

I like these books because they are full of all the things your kids find in that school year. you can read a page here and there throughout the day. it is a great advantage that they are specific to each grade!

david goes to school

This book gives your class the perfect opportunity to do two things:

1. determine classroom rules and boundaries

2. laughter!

David’s antics are so funny and familiar to teachers and students alike, reading about his first day of school is a great first step to a positive classroom climate. be sure to laugh with them as you read!

how I spent my summer vacation

This imaginative story will capture your students’ attention with its fun twists and turns. your students will be so excited to share in their summer adventures too!

I love using this as an introduction to a sharing and writing activity. this is one i keep on the shelf day one but i may not get to it and that’s fine! we have many school days left on the calendar. 😉

“did you really read all those books the first day?”

Any of the books we don’t read on the first day stay on the shelf until we have a chance to open them. I almost always have a student point to a book we haven’t read and ask “aren’t we going to read that one?”

is the perfect opportunity to say “maybe we’ll do it tomorrow”. I can’t wait to see you then. I have a big day planned for us.” what better way to build excitement for another great school day?
