Bibliophiles are the best people to have as friends. they know interesting things and can have deep conversations with focus and attention. And the best part is that you always know the kind of gift they’ll love: a great book.

You are reading: Kindle books as gifts

If you have a great book, all you want is for a fellow reader to discover it too. but can you give away a book you already have on a kindle?

You can gift a kindle book you own if you gift the device it’s on. alternatively, you can purchase a new copy of the book as a gift. All other methods of gifting your Kindle eBook involve copying it from the Amazon ecosystem. DRM protections restrict most Kindle-compatible gifts.

This article explains how you can give away a kindle book you own without having to pay twice. it also covers the amazon compatible way, which is not popular but simple (and expensive).

You’ll also learn how to gift your kindle by keeping the books without having to log in to your amazon account.

how to give a new kindle book?

First, let’s understand the easy way out. If you’re only giving a book away once, spending a few dollars is probably worth less than the time you’ll spend trying to understand the details of the article.

then the easy way is to just pay for the book!

To give away a new kindle book, go to the amazon kindle store and search for the title you want to give away. On the product page, locate the “shop for others” button located below the “shop now” button. by clicking it and adding the recipient’s details, and the eBook will be sent as a gift.

here is a step by step process on what you need to do –

step 1: find the book on amazon

Go to amazon.com and search for the title of the book you want to gift. enter the name of the book in the search bar at the top of the page.

Step 2: Look for the “buy for others” button

on the purchase page of the book, go to the right side of the page.

Under the buy now button, you’ll see an option to buy the book for others. click the “buy for others” button.

note: This option is only available on select books. but don’t worry, most popular books will show you this option.

step 3: send the gift

Now, on the next page, simply fill in the “recipient email address“. this will be the email address of the person who will receive the gift from you. enter your email address and a short touching note.

Once you’re done, simply click the “place your order” button to give the book away. it’s as simple as that!

If you don’t want to go through this whole process of searching for the book (especially when amazon shows multiple results), you can also simply choose the title of the book to gift directly from your content library.

just open your “content library”. then locate the book you want to give away. click on “more action” (or on the 3 dots next to the book title). In the pop-up window that appears, click “give this book as a gift.”

You will be redirected to the purchase page of the book. here, click the “buy for others” option as shown above. enter the details of the person you want to give the book to and click “buy”.

how to give away a kindle book you own?

To give away a kindle book you own, you can purchase a copy as a gift or check out a copy from your account and convert it for gifting as an offline document that can be read on kindle and other e-readers.

method 1: gift a kindle book from device admin page

You can gift a copy of the kindle book you own by navigating to the device management page. however, this method has a problem, which makes it relatively unpopular with kindle enthusiasts.

  1. Visit amazon.com in your web browser and sign in to your account.
  2. Use the top right dropdown menu to navigate to the “Your Account” section.
  3. visit the “manage content and devices” page and scroll to the title you want to gift.
  4. click the ellipses. the three dots will open a list of options. choose to “buy a gift” and enter the recipient’s details.

With the steps described, we can solve the problem. The reason this method isn’t as popular is that you’re not giving away your ebook; you are giving away a copy.

And while copies of digital files can be given away with no required fees, Amazon makes you pay to give away a copy of the ebook you already own. To gift a copy you’ve already paid for without paying again, you must manage the gifts outside of the Amazon ecosystem.

method 2: gift kindle books you own using third party software

Because the amazon ecosystem allows free borrowing but charges to give away a copy, most ebook giveaways are done using third-party software. There are innumerable options to share digital files, but the ideal ones to give as gifts must meet two conditions.

  • The program should pull files outside of the amazon ecosystem, which is usually done by automatically locating downloads even though amazon makes it difficult to navigate file paths.
  • the software must convert files for universal use; this step makes the files easier to read despite violating amazon’s terms.

One such program is epubor, which is the leading ebook drm removal tool. this is how you can give away a copy of the kindle book you already own, absolutely free.

  1. download epubor ultimate to your computer. install the software according to the instructions in the setup wizard.
  2. Install the kindle app for your computer using the app store or windows store.
  3. Sign in to your amazon account on the kindle app.
  4. Open your content library and click the dropdown/popup menu next to the title you want to gift.
  5. click download to get a drm restricted copy of the eBook on your computer.
  6. run the epubor ultimate tool to remove the drm. the eBook will be automatically detected on startup.
  7. Drag the e-book from the left column to the right action area. this automatically removes the drm and prepares the file for conversion.
  8. convert to the desired format. You can choose the format you want to gift the file in, starting with the most universally accessible format (PDF) and ending with the one most compatible with Kindle (AZW3). you can also convert to epub or mobi formats.
  9. transfer the copy to your recipient. Now that you have the eBook as a digital file without Amazon’s oversight, you can give a copy away without incurring penalties on your Kindle account or having to pay Amazon for a buyback. transfer methods include email, usb drive, and wetransfer.

Giving away a kindle ebook feels a bit empty because, despite the digital acceleration since covid, we haven’t fully internalized non-physical items as potential gifts.

Even when you buy a drm-compliant copy of an ebook, it seems like the gift is just a file. it can feel like a real gift, but not as real as a physical book.

One way to convey how much someone means to you while satisfying their interest in reading is to get them a kindle with the books.

You can gift them your device after resetting it to factory settings, but that may take away your content. However, you can take a few steps to ensure that Kindle keeps your downloaded content without having to link it to your account. this is how –

  1. turn on your kindle
  2. navigate to your library
  3. click the options icon next to the title you want to gift
  4. click in download to get the copy on your device
  5. repeat steps 3 and 4 until all the titles you want to gift are out of the cloud and on your amazon kindle device.
  6. now please switch account on kindle first by unregistering kindle from “my account” page in device settings. (see this post on how to unregister your device).
  7. ebooks will remain on your device even if you re-register it from a new account, so ask your recipient to re-register the device with your kindle account credentials.

If amazon wants, you can easily fix this loophole by simply cross-referencing the offline documents with the user’s purchase history.

however, given that amazon makes 100% of the money from the sale of a kindle and 30-70% of the sale of an e-book, it seems unlikely that the e-commerce giant will take steps to discourage purchases of kindle devices.

Still, you may want to make sure the ebooks you’re giving away with your kindle are future-proof. my post on how to deregister a kindle covers some steps you can take to get the ebooks downloaded to your device out of the amazon ecosystem permanently (though not completely legally).

alternative options: lending a kindle book

You may have opened this page not because you intend to get an e-book as a gift for a bibliophile friend, but because you want to give away a book that you find interesting.

for a more informal context, you can always opt for the loan option. The Amazon Loan Option allows you to lend your Kindle title to a friend or family member without having to pay for a new purchase. here are the steps

  1. Sign in to your amazon account after visiting amazon.com through a web browser.
  2. Navigate to your account page from the top right section of the website.
  3. go to the “manage content and devices” page.
  4. select the actions button next to the book; if you are eligible for loan, the option will be clickable.
  5. click the “loan this title” option.
  6. enter the email of the person you want to share the book together with a message.
  7. click “send now” to give your friend a temporary copy of the ebook.
