This original folk tale tells the story of an Irish girl named Fiona. She devises a cunning plan to reclaim all the good fortune that has been taken by a greedy goblin king. Fiona is super smart and uses her brain to bring luck back to the Irish. I love a story with a strong female role model!
jamie o’rourke and the big potato
This classic folk tale is a favorite for a reason! The hilarious story of Jamie O’Rourke, the laziest man in Ireland, and the giant potato is sure to be a favorite of her students.
Jamie grows a giant potato and has to enlist the help of anyone he can find to get it out of the ground. but what do you do with a giant potato? This story is great for sequencing and is also so much fun to retell at literacy stations!
the night before st. patrick’s day
I love this version of the fantastic Christmas classic. In this story, two brothers spend the night before St. on patrick’s day creating a plan to catch a leprechaun.

Not only do the brothers work together to come up with a plan, but the author also does a great job of adding st. patrick’s day traditions The most exciting part is trying to figure out if their plan will work and if they’ll end the story with the leprechaun’s pot of gold!
how to catch a goblin
I love this fun rhyming story written from the point of view of an elf! the rhyme makes the story smart and entertaining.
students will have a blast trying to find the goblin on each page and trying to figure out what the goblin will do next.
This story can be used to discuss or brainstorm what they would do if they had to create a goblin trap. (it can even inspire a writing and stem lesson! 😉)
the luckiest street. patrick’s day ever
if you are looking for a story to highlight st. patrick’s day traditions, this is the story for you! the story uses rhyme to describe a charming street. patrick’s day parade and all the events leading up to it.
This book is especially good for sequencing. have fun with your students while you spend the day of leprechauns before the parade. It will be fun for your students and a great way to practice useful reading skills.

Set in Ireland, this story truly captures the legend of the leprechaun. the book highlights how mischievous goblins really are. The naughty moments in the story are also the funniest moments and will have your students laughing as they enjoy learning about St. legends of patrick’s day.

This is definitely the quirkiest book on the list. i love sharing limerick with my students, especially in and around st. Saint Patrick’s day! these are the silliest and kids love them.
These limericks were written in the 1800s and have been compiled into a book full of nonsense that will make the whole class laugh.
You might even be brave enough to create some limericks together! I know one thing: if anyone can think of a random story with crazy characters, it’s our students!
Have I ever told you how lucky you are?
by far my favorite book to read during st. patrick’s day (or any day honestly ☺️) is this dr. classic seuss! this story is a great book to make connections while reading.
the wise old man in the desert of drize tells Ducky what he has to do to realize how lucky he is. the story goes through many people and circumstances that the duckling can think of whenever he feels unlucky or sad. my students love to brainstorm and make connections about what reminds them how lucky they are!
