More than 50 math textbooks were rejected by the Florida State Department of Education.

the florida department of education has decided that the material in the books does not meet their standards. On Thursday, the department shared some examples of the offending texts on its website.
“You have things like social emotional learning and some of the other things that are more political,” Desantis said during a recent press conference.

the education department said its responsibility is to ensure that textbooks do not include unsolicited strategies.
kevin daly, president of the lee county teachers association, said he wants to see what those strategies are.
“I believe in transparency. and so, you know, it would be great if you could tell me, you know, in this book, this is specifically what the problem is in that book. this is specifically the problem,” daly said.
First Grade Florida Reveals Math, published by McGraw Hill Publishing, is one of the books highlighted by the Department of Education.
Almost every page includes a short section that says “math is mindset” and asks a question related to one’s feelings, such as “how can you act with your classmates to create a safe classroom culture?” or “what helps you feel calm when you’re angry?”
“It’s not about how you feel about the problem or bringing in some of these other things, it’s, there’s a right answer and there’s a wrong answer. And we want all of our students to get the right answers,” Desantis said.
In the book “Thinking Quantitatively: Communicating with Numbers,” the statements discuss cultural norms and the belief that men are better than women at math. It also includes an example that analyzes the probability that a black person will be killed by a gunshot in the us. uu.
“The light of transparency, I think really clears up any confusion here or any doubts,” Daly said. “I think as long as there is some perception that it is not a transparent process. that’s what makes people’s minds wander in different directions.”
