hinterland: a play
Originally published in 2002 on December 12, this was initially released through the faber and faber publisher. working independently, it was a stage play first, as it perfectly captures the essence of stage production for any fan of the playwright. By providing insight into his work on stage, it offers a unique insight into his development as a writer and the novelist he became.
Loosely based on the presidency of charles haughey, this sees the fictional character of johnny silvester from derry living in retirement from being prime minister on the outskirts of dublin. with his wife visiting a cousin, a history doctoral student will interview him. of them, as they come to stay in his opulent home. this visit threatens to delve into some things he would rather leave in the past, as old wounds are reopened once more. Will he be able to accept it all? where is the truth? what will become of the interior?
