thornton waldo burgess was an author of children’s books, nature and the outdoors. Burgess prided himself on being a conservationist, naturalist, and lover of nature and the animals that live in it, which is why he wrote about it for more than five decades. by the time of his retirement, he had written more than 15,000 short stories for newspaper columns and more than 170 books. Thornton was born to Thornton W Burgess Senior (who was directly descended from one of the pioneering sandwich settlers Thomas Burgess) and Caroline F Haywood. his father died in 1874, the year he was born and would be raised by his mother who still lived in sandwich. With no father in his life, Burgess spent much of his youth working eighty hours a day trying to make ends meet. Some of the jobs he took on during this time included catching muskrats, tending cows, selling candy, picking berries or strawberry trees, and packing lily pads from ponds. He also worked for William C Chipman, a man who had a home with a wetland and woodland wildlife habitat on Discovery Hill Road. the habitat would later become the setting for many of the short stories he would write in his later career as an author.
waldo burgess graduated from sandwich high school in 1891 before going to boston to attend business college. he for several months lived in boston and then got up and left to move to springfield, massachusetts. It was here that he would buy a house in Hampden that would become his home until his death in 1965. However, Burgess often revisited Sandwich, which he claimed was his spiritual home and the birthplace of the. he would still be influenced by people and childhood experiences that included a concern and interest in the outdoors and wildlife. In 1910, he published his first novel, Old Mother West Wind, in which he featured some of his most popular characters who would recur in later stories and novels. Some of these characters included Peter Rabbit, Jimmy Skunk, Grand Frog, Reddy Fox, Merry Little Winds, Sammy Jay, Old Mother West Wind, Spotty the Turtle, among many others.

Over the next five decades, Burgess wrote novels that would be published and translated around the world. her novels have been published in Italian, Swedish, Spanish, French, German and in obscure languages such as Gaelic. He wrote the novels along with Cady Harrison of Rockport Massachusetts and New York, who was the chief illustrator. he gave the world the familiar animal characters that are so recognizable today. Thornton Waldo Burgess was also involved in conservation efforts and worked on various projects during his life that included wildlife protection programs through the Bedtime Story Club, helping pass laws to protect migratory wildlife, and wildlife conservation programs. the land through the green meadow club. other efforts include the nature league radio broadcast and the happy squirrel thrift club. For his efforts, he was awarded an honorary degree by Northeastern University in 1938. For leading children along a path of beautiful outdoor scenery, he was awarded the Permanent Wildlife Protection Fund award with the Service Medal distinguished and also earned a special gold medal from the boston museum of science. Burges published the autobiography “Now I Remember” in 1960 in which he recalled his early life in Sandwich as well as his achievements in his writing career. By the time he was 83, he had over fifteen thousand stories to his name having been a syndicated columnist for bedtime stories between 1912 and 1960.

“The Adventures of Peter Cottontail” by Thornton W Burgess is a perfect book for a parent’s library. the story comes with a lot of adventures and human-like creatures that are very entertaining. Most kids will love following the lives of the many forest friends that Burgess creates to immerse her young readers in an escapade into nature. he writes in short chapters for his novels and most of the stories are also short but with lots of pictures to help hold the children’s attention through visualization. Of all the fun animal antics, kids are sure to wonder about the many animals in their woods and gardens and what they might be up to when no one is looking. As with many other classics, there are lessons for children to learn, such as not bragging or bragging, listening to elders, and being careful. The latest editions still come with the original illustrations by Cady Harrison. easy on the eyes, they are clear and simple narratives and just what you want to relive your childhood or to read to your children.
“the adventures of uncle billy possum” by thornton w burgess is the story of poor uncle billy. he has gone to farmer brown’s chicken coop because he is hungry and needs eggs. but then the farmer finds out about his tricks and sets traps while he is sleeping inside. he now he is trapped inside the chicken coop and the snow has been falling and covering the traps. Unable to see the traps, he soon gets caught in one and Farmer’s Assistant Brown soon locates him by following the tracks in the snow. the great lesson is that arrogance and greed will often result in ruin. is an excellent introduction to the timelessness of the love and respect that animals must have for each other in order to coexist in peace.
