Valentine&039s Day Books for Kindergarten – Simply Kinder

Finding the right books for kindergarten can be tricky! So here is a list of tried and true kindergarten valentines day books! These books show strong examples of love, persistence, and kindness through actions, words, and written expression that all children can relate to. All of these books offer great opportunities for sequencing events, how to write (as well as other strategies and writing prompts), and creativity.

Marylou likes Herbie and lets her know by leaving sweet notes all over the farm. Herbie finds the notes every day but she doesn’t know which slug is Marylou, among the hundreds of them on the farm she leaves her notes but Marylou can’t find them for one reason or another. Finally, after a whole week of not giving up on finding her true loves, Herbie finds Marylou and they live happily ever after on the farm. this book is a great example of not giving up on love and also a great review for the days of the week.

one day it rained hearts where cornelia augusta lived. she collected them and made unique valentines for four of his special friends. this would be a great story to read to your students and model how to make a valentine for someone special. Then she could have a valentine crafting station as one of her hubs for the entire month of February.

All the students in Gilbert’s class were given the task of creating a Valentine’s Day card that said something nice about each of their classmates. Some Valentines were easy for Gilbert to write, while others weren’t so easy. Gilbert chooses to play a trick on two of his classmates, Margaret and Lewis, who hadn’t been too nice to him in the past. he wrote not-so-nice valentines and signed another classmate’s name on his valentines for margaret and lewis. As the students read their valentines in class, some of the children are upset by some of the messages they received. the students begin to blame each other. Mrs. Byrd, her teacher, decides that the students will work on their workbooks for the rest of the morning because Valentine’s Day wasn’t about fighting. While the students were working, they began to realize that it wasn’t Lewis and Margaret who wrote the “bad” Valentines, it was Gilbert. All the students were mad at Gilbert and didn’t want to sit with him at lunch or play with him at recess. Gilbert realizes that what he did was wrong and wrote two cute Valentine messages before the Valentine’s Day party in the afternoon.

This is an adorable story about a monster who doesn’t really fit in with all the cute and fluffy things that live around him. He sets out in search of love but after many attempts he does not find what he is looking for. when he is about to give up, he finds love. this story leads to many talking points about love and never giving up on what he set out to find. this will become a favorite valentine book for kindergarten.

How do dinosaurs say I love you? by jane yolan

This story offers examples and non-examples of how “dinosaurs” say “I love you”. uses common mistakes and good choices kids make every day. offers a clear definition of the appropriate ways to show love. this story would be a great story to read and then draw examples and non-examples of showing love. then children could write and illustrate 1-3 ways to say/show “I love you”.

pete the cat: valentines day is great by james dean

At the beginning of the story, Pete thinks Valentine’s Day isn’t great. but after talking to her friend callie about her, she decides to make valentines for all her friends. however, he realizes that he hasn’t done some for some of his friends, the bus driver, the librarian, the firefighters, and the policemen. so he and callie work together to make several more. Lovers make their friends very happy. At Callie’s Valentine’s party, Pete feels bad that he didn’t make Callie a Valentine. callie tells him that she’s fine because spending time with him is better than any valentine. This book is not your usual Pete the Cat book with repetition and rhyme. instead, it delivers a strong actionable message that speaks louder than words.

In this story, splat creates a special valentine for kitty. she likes the kitty, but is confused about how she feels about him because she often punches him in the belly or calls him stinky when they meet. Just before Splat is about to give Kitty the Valentine she created, she realizes that Spike likes Kitty too. Splat thinks Spike likes her better because Spike convinces him that her love is “bigger”, so Splat despairs that Kitty will like her. However, Kitty created a valentine for Splat with a poem telling him that she likes him too. many kindergartners can relate to how splat must feel when kitty teases them by touching them on the tummy and telling them they smell bad. Some kids think he’s mean when it’s actually his way of pointing out things they like about them.

there was an old lady who swallowed a lucille colander rose

the old lady swallows a rose, some lace, glitter, candy, a jewel, hearts and a card to make a special valentine. this book follows the pattern of all the other holiday versions of this book. it’s great for repetition, rhyme, and predictable text. my students are always very successful at sequencing the events in the books in this series.

happy valentine’s day, mouse! by laura numeroff

mouse is excited to make valentines and give them to his friends. This is a short story that revisits many of the characters from the si te da un…. laura numeroff series. After reading this story, you can revisit some of the stories in this series that you have already read this year and students can choose to write about their favorite or they can create a valentine for someone special. This is a great valentine book for kindergarten!

nancy elegant: heart to heart by jane o’conner

fancy nancy receives a beautiful valentine from someone but she doesn’t know who. Nancy immediately sets out to find out who. she dons a “mystery solving outfit” and follows a trail. She finds out who she is and gives them a Valentine’s gift in return. Fancy Nancy is the definition of Valentine’s Day… glitter, ruffles and fuchsia! I love the vocabulary offered by the books in this series, this one is no different.
