The program does not specifically dictate how many people could potentially be the dragon reborn. we only know that one person will wear the title. in episode 1 moiraine is tracking down a man who was “soft” by other aes sedai (meaning they took away the ability to use the one power). It would seem that she believed that there was a possibility that this man was the dragon reborn. so moraine isn’t really sure who he is. however, she is pretty sure by the end of that episode that the reborn dragon lived in the two rivers.
by the end of the episode, she has gathered rand al’thor, perrin aybara, mat cauthon, and egwene al’vere to join her riding towards the white tower of the aes sedai. she believes that one of them is the dragon. that theory is aided by the fact that trolocs and fades are after them. the dark one seems to believe that he is one of them too. So, it looks like there are four people who could be the dragon reborn.

wait a sec. In episode 3, Dana, the innkeeper who is later revealed to be a dark friend, says that there are five candidates, who have been floating around in her dreams. that was not a mistake mat brings it up in the next episode, questioning who the fifth person could be. (the show cuts to retrieve albar’s imprisonment immediately after mat asks the question. dun dun dun.) then, the dark one thinks there is at least one other person who could be the dragon reborn. the most likely candidates are: nynaeve al’meara, wisdom of the two rivers; and logain ablar, a man who can channel unique power and has already proclaimed himself the dragon reborn.
here is the case that each of these people is the dragon reborn.
rand al’thorbeing one of four of the two rivers, rand has a chance. along with egwene, mat and perrin, he had dreams in which the dark one appears. both the dark one and moiraine believe that he could be the dragon reborn. (And the same can be said for the other three that left the two rivers with moraines.)
The biggest indicator yet occurs when dana reveals to rand that she’s a dark friend. in a key scene, her bedroom door is locked and dana tells her that no man can break down that door. but to her surprise, she does. now, this could certainly just be a red herring. after all, rand is a very beefy lad. but it seems equally likely that this is a touch of foreshadowing. he is capable of doing things that others cannot and may have accidentally used the only power to help him escape. (would air tissues do the trick?)

verdict: could be the dragon reborn.
egwene al’vereegwene seems to be a candidate for moiraine’s eyes and the brunette. Nynaeve clearly sees her unique power in her and asks her to train to become a Wisdom. Moraine is taking special care of Egwene, giving her lessons while the others sleep, and we’ve seen her wield the only power, even if it was only a paltry thing compared to Moraine’s brick-throwing power and the Florence Nightingale’s healing powers of Nynaeve. /p>
There is also an important moment in the aes sedai camp when moiraine returns from meeting with logain. lan asks moiraine if logain is as powerful as egwene. they are already using its potential as a kind of high water mark. moiraine doesn’t think logain is that powerful, but she’s not entirely sure. the show is definitely using a sleight of hand to keep viewers away from the scent of the real dragon reborn. egwene has only shown small displays of power so far, but she has potential.
verdict: maybe. but it is likely that she is preparing to become a powerful aes sedai.
mat cauthonmat has many of the same indicators as the rand. more importantly, at the end of episode 4, there is a scene that at the very least foreshadows something strange happening with the mat. It briefly appears that mat has murdered the family that was letting him, rand, and thom merrilin stay overnight. but then he takes the ruby dagger he stole from shadar logoth (he shouldn’t have done that) and points to a space in the attic before saying “I see you”. then a myrddraal appears. mat seems to have a great ability to see what others cannot see at the time. that’s the biggest indication yet that mat may be the dragon reborn. (yes, yes, shut up book readers).
If we’re missing something from the books, it’s just worth noting that mat hasn’t been the same since he left shadar logoth. we really have no indication why. he is irritable, he vomited on the farm and his horse seems to be afraid of him. Furthermore, Thom seems to believe that his illness is an indication that he has been tapping into the unique power.
verdict: maybe. his case is as good, if not a little stronger, than perrin and rand’s.

perrin aybarasame here: he had the dream, moiraine thinks it could be him, the dark one thinks it could be him. The biggest piece of advice we have with Perrin is that he seems to commune with wolves. one comes and licks the wound on his leg that was acquired during a Trolloc attack. after that, he doesn’t seem to bother him anymore. Also, Egwene believes that the wolves were herding the two of them towards the Tuatha’an who took them in on their way to Tarvalon. wolves aren’t part of any dragon reborn lore shared so far, but it definitely has a mystical vibe.
verdict: ooooooooo. (wolf for maybe.)
nynaeve al’mearathere is a way to add a fifth to the original group of four thanks to dana. while that detail feels important, there’s a lot that indicates there are four people: from their dreams, to the dark one who haunts them, to moraine believing she is in fact one of those four. nynaeve being the dragon, or anyone outside of rand, mat, perrin, and egwene, seems unlikely, but still possible.
dana’s statement combined with moiraine’s conviction that the dragon reborn comes from the two rivers makes nynaeve a logical fifth. but moraine also seems to have ruled out the possibility when she discovered that nynaeve was older than the others at the pool of two rivers. however, nynaeve makes an incredible show of force in the single power at the end of episode 4, healing many guardians and aes sedai at once. this is beyond any power we have seen so far. is it like a dragon? maybe. logain seems to think so. his power is so impressive that it seems logain even stops believing that he is the dragon reborn. Still, he doesn’t seem to fit the criteria, despite strong hints that it may be her in episode 4. She may be ready to become an Aes Sedai.
verdict: a grumpy “not likely”.
logainif nynaeve is a candidate to be the fifth of dana’s dream, then logain could also be that fifth. Logain calls himself the Dragon Reborn. the aes sedai fear him. they even talk about how powerful it is for a man who can channel. so maybe he is the fifth. still, smart editing aside, he feels like a long shot. he is powerful for a man, but moiraine also says that his power is “a pinprick of candlelight against the raging sun”. he himself seems to doubt it after seeing nynaeve’s power. Before that, Ian points out that he is at least ten years old to be the dragon reborn.
Also, at the end of episode 4, the aes sedai appeases him in the cave. they also have the ability to appease the dragon reborn, so that doesn’t necessarily mean he’s out of the running, but it seems narratively implausible since we haven’t seen the dark one chasing him. He’s barely been on the show, and it would be a weird plot trajectory to turn him into it, especially after the power was stripped from him.
verdict: magic 8-ball says: “the prospects are not so good.”
