william gibson is a science fiction scientist best known for his pioneering work in the cyberpunk genre. He debuted as a novelist in 1984 with the release of Neuromancer, considered one of his best works. The book is the only novel in history to win the Nebula Prize, the Philip K. dick award, and the hugo award.
gibson was born in south carolina and spent most of his childhood in wytheville, virginia. In high school, he became interested in the Beat Generation and writers like Jack Kerouac and William S. burroughs that would have a great effect on him. he was not a great student and dropped out of high school before graduating. later, when he started his conscription in vietnam, he had no interest in going. A young William would say at his preliminary hearing that he intended to try all existing drugs. he then headed to canada to avoid the draft, but was never actually drafted, so he was not considered a deserter.

He spent the rest of his 60s in Toronto before meeting a woman from Vancouver. The two would move to Vancouver, where Gibson enrolled at the University of British Columbia and earned his bachelor’s degree. At UBC, Gibson took a science fiction course that led him to write a short story in the genre. After graduating, he stopped writing until he met punk musician and author John Shirley, who encouraged him to take writing more seriously. he began writing and selling short stories about the near future that were heavily influenced by cybernetics and cyberspace. These ideas would eventually lead to Nueromancer, his first novel.
