an early literacy program

The most effective way to prepare your child to learn is to read to him. The 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program is designed to help parents achieve this goal. By reading just three stories a day, you and your child can read more than 1,000 books in a year.

The program is for children from birth to kindergarten and is free. families work at their own pace at home. kids win prizes for listening to family members read to them.

To register for the program, please complete this online form. the staff will email you when your bag of 1000 books is ready. you can pick up at the checkout counter or through curbside services anytime the library is open.

You can keep track in two ways! if you try one and switch to the other tracking method, that’s fine!

  • Paper Tracking Logs: These are located in your log folder. let us know if you need extras!
  • beanstack website or mobile app
    • if you already have an oregon library account, you need to add your child to the account. then you can sign up for the 1000 books program and start tracking.
    • otherwise create an account for yourself or your family and then add a child.
    • the beanstack app is our new crawl app that provides a more direct connection with the oregon library and the local community. we are no longer promoting the app available through bridges. If you are currently using the old app, you can continue tracking with it.

    To receive an award, email the youth services department. at oreyouth@oregonlibrary.org or call 608-835-3656. please include what level you have completed. staff will contact you when your prize(s) is(are) ready!

    • At registration, children receive a bag of 1,000 books before kindergarten.
    • For every 100 books, children earn a sticker.
    • a at 500, they win a toy (finger puppets or bathtub toys).
    • at 1,000, kids win a pocket book and a certificate.

    Can you really expect to read 1000 books to your child before kindergarten? By reading just three stories a day, you and your child can read more than 1,000 books in a year.

    I read the same story every night to my son. Can I count that book more than once? Yes! repetition helps a child develop literacy skills.

    I have more than one child that I read to. Can I count the same title for each child? Yes! if an older sibling reads to a younger sibling, that counts too.

    Do books read at story time or in preschool or daycare count? Yes! Every time your child is read to counts.

    Do virtual/online story times or watching a video of someone reading a book count? Yes! anytime you read to your child, either in person or virtually.

    How do I collect my awards since the library building is closed to the public? Email us at oreyouth@oregonlibrary.org or call 608-835-3656. tell us what level you have completed. staff will contact you when your prize(s) is(are) ready!

    what if i already have a beanstack account? then you only need to add the child who is participating in the program. once you add your child, you can sign them up to get 1000 books before kindergarten on the child’s bean registry.

    will the old app still work? I don’t want to move everything. yes, the application available through the bridges will continue to work. feel free to start tracking with beanstack. you don’t need to scan every book and title to count. you can enter the number of books read.
