an extraordinary union

An Extraordinary Union is the first installment in Alyssa Cole’s loyal league of books series. this novel is an outstanding example of a historical romance novel as it is solid and deeply rooted in reality. the author doesn’t look at the past through Vaseline-stained glasses, and she doesn’t lather up either. An Extraordinary Union is undeniably a blast from the past and highlights America’s obscene history of abuse and racism. The author, Alyssa Cole, introduces readers to the protagonist, Elle, who is an extremely angry woman and has every reason to be. because she is black and female, she is ignored and marginalized by almost everyone, including most unionists, many of whom love to spy on her. however, her apparent insignificance is undoubtedly one of her best weapons; the confederate’s refusal to see as a human being means that they are unaware that she hears them. Another great weapon that Elle possesses is her eidetic memory.

the romantic conflict in the extraordinary union centers on elle’s difficulty trusting malcolm, who in addition to being white; he has a way with his words and is a very charming man. malcolm is a very likeable character and as the story progresses he grows in empathy and understanding and his respect for her is wonderful. One of the most thought-provoking things about this novel is Malcolm’s ability to give himself wholeheartedly to Elle and put everything into her shared cause, but Elle still can’t do the same for him. she constantly worries about an unjust and brutal world. In one of the novel’s most powerful scenarios, after the two declare their love for each other and Malcolm loses himself in her, Elle makes no attempt to save him. by rescuing him, she was going to risk the lives of her friends and her mission, which is to stop the confederacy. She therefore decides to put the life of her friend and her mission before the life of Malcolm.

This is undoubtedly an exceptional decision in a romance, which in no way weakens the love story. The Extraordinary Union is a tense spy novel that’s full of sweeping romance, explosive outrage, and a powerful story too.

let it shine

Let It Shine is a brilliantly written interracial romance novel that takes place in the year 1961. This novel takes place just after the civil rights movement. let it shine is told from two perspectives: sophronia, a very young african-american protagonist, and ivan, her lover. Ivan and Sophronia meet again after the last time they saw each other when they were still children. Ivan’s family employed Sophronia’s mother as a domestic helper. Therefore, Ivan and Sophronia had plenty of time to play together and interact with each other. After the sudden death of Sophronia’s mother, these two characters do not see each other for several years. however, the two meet again during a nonviolent protest meeting. Because this novel was set during the civil rights movement, the challenges and obstacles the two face are expected.

To give a different light to the subject, the author narrates the story from their perspectives. On Ivan’s part, the story was told from the perspective of a Jewish man, who had fallen in love with an African-American woman. Unsurprisingly, Ivan faces some prejudice mainly because 1961 is not that far from the Holocaust.
