Amanda Gorman is an American poet best known for her role as the sixth poet, and the youngest, to deliver a reading during a presidential inauguration. Gorman took the stage on January 20, 2021 for the inauguration of President Joe Biden and read her original poem, The Hill We Climb. reading the poem earned her instant praise internationally and landed both of her books on best-seller lists.

Gorman was born in Los Angeles, California, where she was raised by a single mother. Ella Amanda was born a twin with Ella’s sister Gabrielle Ella and has another brother. ella’s sister gabrielle de ella is an activist and filmmaker. Her mother, Joan Wicks, worked as a sixth-grade teacher at Watts. When she was a child, Amanda and her siblings had little time in front of the television in her family and Amanda preferred to read and write in her spare time.

As a child, Amanda has auditory processing disorder and is hypersensitive to sound, she also had a speech impediment as a child. she the latter was helped by attending speech therapy during her childhood. Instead of seeing it as a negative, Gorman always saw it as a strength because she allowed him to develop stronger reading and writing skills. When she was a child, she also used music as a form of speech therapy and found that it helped her quite a bit.

for his education, gorman attended a private school in santa monica before earning the milken family foundation college scholarship. he would attend harvard university where he would study sociology. he graduated cum laude in 2020 from the university.

gorman has been doing poetry most of her life, but was inspired to become a united nations youth delegate after seeing a speech by malala yousafzai. She would then go on to be chosen as the Los Angeles Young Poet Laureate in 2014. She would publish her first book of poetry the following year.

Finally, her breakthrough came when she was selected to read the inauguration poem at the recommendation of Jill, President Biden’s wife. Gorman hoped that her poem would “represent a moment of unity for our country.” since then, she was commissioned to compose an original poem to be recited at the pre-game ceremony of the super bowl lv and she also signed img models for her sponsorship.

gorman has stated his plans to run for president in 2036.
