angela hill and david owen are the duo behind ideabooks, the industry reference for rare, vintage and out-of-print tomes on fashion, photography and design, and an indispensable resource for creatives , including clare waight keller. and Nicolas Ghesquiere. What started as a niche fashion archival book retailer morphed into a publisher and seller of books and merchandise, with a stall at Dover Street Market.
hill came from fashion, having previously worked for comme des garçons and browns as well as assisting fashion editors and stylists in the late 1980s. she pursued a career as a photographer and co-founded a magazine in the 1990s owen started out as a journalist and editor for graphic design, photography, and advertising magazines. she then turned to the music, digital and television business, and co-created a show called flipside.

The couple pursued the idea full time, having always collected numerous copies of their favorite books, when Colette’s Sarah Andelman suggested selling some of Owen’s books in her store. when hill pitched the idea of a pop-up store to the street. Martins Lane Hotel, Idea Books, a portmanteau of the initials of the Hill and Owen family name, was born. They began selling books at Dover Street Market in 2006 and now have a presence in New York, Los Angeles, Tokyo and the CDG Trading Museum Paris. idea’s e-commerce site also sells brand name products and they have published several books for photographers collier schorr and willy vanderperre and designer gosha rubchinskiy.

Beyond traditional retail, the company’s main channel of communication with its customers is Instagram, where they advertise coveted books to their 380,000 followers for purchase on a first-come, first-served basis.
