early years and personal life

the son of sophie marie hansen and chester r. Stackhouse, Ann Rule was one of their two children born in Lowell, Michigan on October 22, 1930. With her father working as a sports coach and her mother a child development specialist focusing on the handicapped, she grew up in the local area there until she attended college. Surrounded by members of law enforcement from a young age, she soon became interested in crime. her uncle and her grandfather had been working as bailiffs for the local area, while her other uncle turned out to be a medical examiner along with her cousin who worked as a prosecutor. this helped sow the seeds of interest for her, a fascination that grew during her time volunteering at the nearby local county jail.

Upon graduating from Coatesville High School, he then attended the University of Washington, where he earned his degree in creative writing, while also minoring in psychology, criminology, and penology. Later, she took more criminology courses at Highline Community College, which furthered her knowledge in the field. All of this led to her career as an accomplished true crime chronicler.

Starting as an officer operating within the Seattle Police Department, he would gain first-hand experience within the field, which he would then put to use. Early in her writing career, she would use the pseudonym Andy Stack while writing for publications such as ‘True Detective’ among other periodicals, a career that began in 1969.
