Are books better than films? – The King&039s School Chester

In recognition of the 20th anniversary of World Book Day, Isabella Jones put together a report on why she thinks reading a novel is a much better experience than just watching a movie.

It’s a damning stain on our society that most teens would rather watch a movie adaptation than pick up a book. if a novel has been made into a movie, you should always read the novel first because it enchants your imagination more. Also, you should read the book first, since the author envisioned the plot the way he wrote it. Although watching the movie can give you a new interpretation of the story, it can also ruin the way you imagined it. for example, when i read the harry potter series i thought harry, ron and hermione looked very different than they do in the movies. now after watching the movies when i read the books i can only imagine daniel radcliff as harry, rupert grint as ron and emma watson as hermione.

when you read a book, you can interpret the plot and the story to your liking. books allow your mind to be creative. plus, the books are much more detailed than the movies. normally a movie is about two hours long whereas in a book there can be hundreds (perhaps thousands) of pages of description. the books also develop their characters much more and add multiple dimensions to them; such as detailing your emotions and thoughts. books also improve your vocabulary. You may not realize it, but while reading a brilliant novel you are improving your spelling, punctuation, and grammar. It is proven that people who read more get better jobs and therefore better pay. at king’s we have an impressive library where there are all the books you can imagine. Later, students can read for pleasure or study and hopefully get better jobs in the near future. books are always the beginning of great stories. you never see a movie and think it should be turned into a book; most good movies are based on books anyway!

On the other hand, one could argue that the movies are better than the books. people can say that movies have a more social aspect than books. you can go to the cinema with your friends and talk about the movie together. a book cannot be read in the same way and this could lead to disagreement. just as watching a movie can help you interpret the plot in a space of two hours, while it can take you a whole weekend to finish a book. Although I think the depth of a book is a good factor, some people don’t want to spend the time. the film industry creates more job opportunities and there are many different roles when creating a film such as producer, cast, makeup artists, director, screenwriter etc. with books, there are only a small number of roles, such as writer, editor, publisher, illustrator, and marketing involved.

In conclusion, I think the books are better than the movies. books develop your imagination, are much more detailed than movies, improve your English writing and are proven to help you get better jobs. meanwhile, movies are socially better, quicker to watch, and have more job opportunities. But can watching a movie give you a better grade on your next English test? Can watching a movie get you a better job? Can watching a movie give you the same depth of story as reading a book? I would answer no to all of these questions; you can answer yes to a couple. it’s your choice to watch a movie or read a book. although maybe think about this report before choosing, and remember; readers are leaders!
