amazon has a fairly complete ecosystem for kindle, especially in buying, managing, publishing and reading e-books. So why should we backup kindle books?
Believe it or not, your kindle books are not your property, amazon would permanently remove your books from their kindle library without saying a word. For example, his account was hacked and Amazon decided to unilaterally close it and he would lose all his purchased books.

Fortunately, this article gives you two ways to back up your kindle books to a place away from the amazon kindle and actually own them. one is from kindle app for pc or mac, another is from your kindle e-readers, like kindle paperwhite, kindle voyage.
the restriction to back up your kindle books
The only restriction for backing up kindle books is digital rights management (drm). why should we remove kindle drm to backup books? can we just copy the downloaded .azw files to a new folder directly?
no, we can’t. in fact, if amazon deletes a book from your kindle library, you won’t be able to read it even though you have the .azw file because amazon tells the content server that you no longer own the book. and the connection between you and the content server is the drm. that’s why you need to remove drm to backup kindle books.
