America’s Battle of the Books – What is Battle of the Books

America’s Battle of the Books is a voluntary reading incentive program for students in grades 3-12. the purpose is simply to encourage students to read good books and have fun while competing with their peers.

three questions you need to answer before you start

  1. what list of books do I want my students to read? there are 10, 20, 28 & 36 book lists. we suggest in the first year to use the lists of 10 or 20 books.
  2. what will be the composition of the teams? Typically if you are using the 10 book list you will have teams of 3 people with each team member being responsible for 3-4 books on the book list. list of 20 books, there will be teams of 4 people and each person responsible for 5 books. 28 or 36 book lists, there will be teams of 5 or 6 people, and each student is responsible for 5 to 7 books.
  3. when will the competition take place? check your school calendar and find out the best time to schedule the competition. some schools hold their competition before the holiday season, while others don’t start reading until after the first of the year and have their competition in the spring. try to keep the time period as short as possible to keep children motivated and focused on reading.

what is “battle”?

A typical “battle” is an all-day game or tournament, such as college bowling or a family feud, in which teams of students earn points by answering questions about books on the book lists. A typical day of competition begins with a meeting in the cafeteria, a morning snack, and instructions for the day. they are then assigned to a team, given a mascot or name, and sent on their first round of the “battle”. they play several rounds, each against a different team. at the end of the morning, the points are added up, and the two teams with the most points are invited to a “big battle” after lunch, with the other teams as the audience. these two teams may have a chance to participate in the regional “battle” in April and also the state “battle” which usually takes place in May or June, if local and county participants in your area have organized state battles .
