Best fantasy books published in 2016 – Fantasy Book Review

all the birds in the sky by charlie jane anders

all the birds in the sky is an intense emotional roller coaster that flits between genres, using both science fiction and fantasy to get its message across, and though it pits them against each other, the novel never says one is better than the other. other, each one has its place in this story and it is by both working together that the best result will be found. all the birds in the sky is also a very human story that focuses on the confusion and distrust that can arise from not understanding the unknown.

nevernight by jay kristoff (the nevernight chronicle: book 1)

if the harry potter series and locke lamora lies ever got together and decided to have a baby dark book, they would call it nevernight. This is the kind of book I dream of reading. only a fantasy expert could have written one so well. That’s exactly why authors like Brandon Sanderson and Patrick Rothfuss are so successful: They know their audience. And here Jay Kristoff certainly knew his stuff.

timandra whitecastle’s iron touch (the living sword: book 1)

This fantasy novel had everything I love: fast-paced plot, fearless female lead, nonstop fight scenes, some romantic/sexy moments, and laugh-out-loud humor. it’s gritty, gross, a bit different, and has an intense gloomy feel to it.

the wheel of osheim by mark lawrence (the war of the red queen #3)

All the horrors of hell stand between Snorri Ver Snagason and the rescue of his family, if the dead can be rescued. for jalan kendeth to get back out alive and with loki’s key is all that matters. Loki’s creation can open any lock, any door, and can also be the key to Jal’s fortune in the world of the living. Jal plans to return to the three W’s that have been at the core of his profligate, idle life: wine, women, and gambling. However, fate has bigger plans… Osheim’s wheel spins faster and faster and will tear the world apart unless stopped. When the end of all things is near and there is nowhere to run, even the worst coward must find new answers. Jal and Snorri face many dangers, from the Dead King’s hordes of corpses to the Blue Lady’s many mirrors; But in the end, fast or slow, Osheim’s wheel will exert its power. in the end it’s win or die.

“this book has it all: magic and science fiction, humor and horror, truth and lies, and then a few more lies. there is no needless obfuscation of secrets within secrets behind secrets: the war of the red queen is a fairly transparent war. that creates drama by putting the characters in situations with many viable solutions and not knowing which one the characters will choose. this trilogy is essential reading for all fantasy readers.”

The city of wonders has been saved by almost miraculous forces and the silent army has risen, ready to defend the fellein empire and empress nachia at all costs. the power that was hidden in the mounds is on the move, seeking a final confrontation with the very entities that have kept it locked away since the cataclysm. andover lashk has finally come to accept his fate and prepares to travel back to fellein. The Sa’ba Taalor continue to dominate every country and people they encounter, but the final conflict draws near: the great wave of the Sa’ba Taalor rises to destroy an empire, and the silent army prepares to stop them in their tracks. caught in the middle is the fellein empire and the people who have gathered on the final battlefield. Faithful and wicked, soldiers and assassins alike, all stand or fall as gods old and new bring their war to a world-changing end. some fights are eternal. some conflicts never end. the gods of war are here and they are determined to win.

“the silent army is a book that improves on all the facets that made its predecessors great. this feels like a satisfying conclusion to the first arc of a much larger story, because this book ends a lot of plot threads which started right back at the beginning of the first book, but leave some big open threads asking for more. i need more stories set in this world. please indulge me mr moore.”

“if you’ve already read the first two volumes, you probably don’t need encouragement to go on to the third. if not, you can be sure that this is a trilogy whose conclusion doesn’t disappoint at all, and seen as a whole, It’s a truly exceptional piece of work, and I suspect it will join [The Lord of the Rings] and [The Duncton Chronicles] on my frequently re-read list, pretty amazing for something I initially thought would be “an amusing zombocalypse”.”

take care of tricia sullivan

tricia sullivan has written an extraordinary, genre-defining novel that begins with the mystery of a woman who barely knows herself and ends with a discovery that transcends space and time. Along the way we follow our heroine as she attempts to track down a killer in another man’s body, and the man who has been taken, her will trapped within the mind of the being who has taken him. and in the center of a whole briefcase that contains innumerable possible realities.

“occupy me” is very funny and very unusual, not least because it has a main character who is not just an angel, but a middle-aged black lesbian. it is highly imaginative, difficult to categorize, and often bizarre. But what she has done inspired me to go and read Sullivan’s other work because, like Lauren Beukes, her stories certainly stand out from the rest.”

hex by thomas olde heuvelt

who is born here, is condemned to stay until death. he who comes to stay, never leaves. Welcome to Black Spring, the seemingly quaint Hudson Valley town haunted by the Witch of Black Rock, a 17th-century woman whose eyes and mouth are sewn shut. she blind and silenced, she walks the streets and enters houses at will. she stands by the children’s beds at night. the townspeople have become so used to her that they often forget she is there. or what threat she represents she. because if the stitches ever open, the story goes, the whole town will die. the curse must not be allowed to spread. the black spring elders have used high-tech surveillance to quarantine the city. Frustrated at being locked up, the town’s teens decide to break the strict rules and go viral with the ghost. but doing so sends the city spiraling into a dark nightmare.

“i don’t think anything was lost in nancy forest-flyer’s translation of the dutch original. olde heuvelt has written a compelling story rich in imagination and history that is undeniably haunting. hex is really absorbing with an easy style of writing that takes you into the world of the black spring and keeps you caught up in the horrific events as they unfold.”

the fall of the gods by kj parker

If you visit the temple and ask politely for forgiveness, you might get it, assuming you’re not Lord Archias and you haven’t killed the goddess’s favorite musician, Lysippus. but even goddesses are expected to follow certain rules, and as much as she wants to punish lord archias, it seems that his annoying and all-powerful father forbids it. so the goddess will only have to get around that by sparing lord archias if she can handle some simple, or rather seemingly impossible, tasks. a goddess has to do what a goddess has to do.

“This book is more about the journey, the exploration, and the storylines that lead to the downfall of the titular gods. I can’t really tell you what this book has to offer because it’s something you have to see for yourself. it’s a story that needs to be experienced, and I would wholeheartedly encourage you to experience what it has to offer.”

“although I wasn’t a big fan of a darker shade of magic, I found I couldn’t put aside a gathering of shadows. the characters are much more engaging and the supporting characters feel more complete, with the inclusion of others empires the world is so much bigger and it was really interesting to get other points of view on magic in a world full of it there are a lot of plot points leading up to the next novel but the suspense really makes you hope that the The third book is coming sooner rather than later as it leaves you wondering what will happen to each of the characters!”

with blood on the sand by bradley beaulieu (the broken sands song #2)

ceda, now a sword maiden in service to the kings of sharakhai, trains as one of their elite warriors, collecting secrets even as she is sent on covert missions to further their rule. she knows the dark history of the asirim, who hundreds of years ago were enslaved by kings against her will, but when she joins them as a maiden, chaining them to her, she feels her pain as if she were the your own. they hunger for liberation, they demand it, but with the power of the gods compelling them, they find its chains unbreakable. Ceda might become the champion they’ve been waiting for, but the need to tread carefully has never been greater. After her recent defeat at the hands of the moonless rebel host, the kings are hungry for blood and scour the city in their ruthless quest for revenge. Ceda’s friend Emre and her new allies in the Moonless Army hope to take advantage of the unrest in Sharakhai, despite the danger of opposing the kings and their divine powers, and the maidens and their deadly ebony blades. When Ceda and Emre are drawn into a plot by the blood mage Hamzakiir, they discover a devastating secret that may very well destroy the power of the hated kings. But it may all come undone if Ceda can’t learn to navigate the shifting tides of power in Sharakhai and control the growing anger of the Asirim that threatens to overwhelm her…

“the pacing with blood on the sand is great, it’s very descriptive and yet never boring. you really have a sense of fear for the well being of the characters, not just physically, but also emotionally. the story is very inventive with plenty of twists and turns that make it heartbreaking. Çeda’s story has a long way to go and I can only imagine we’re in for a stormy ride, especially with the way the book ended on such a fantastic cliffhanger.”
