1. pregnancy for men: the full 9 months, £7.99

You are reading: Best books for dads to be

What it is: The title is a giveaway, but a good book title should tell you what you need to know, and this book does that every step of the way.

gives dads a great overview of what to expect during pregnancy, what their partner may be experiencing, as well as tips on how they can support them.

Why We Love It: Some may find the humor a bit “silly” (and if so, they might prefer the book on hypnobirthing later on this list), but it’s designed to put parents – be at ease. yes, there will be some new experiences and you may be a bit anxious, but this book will guide you through the nine months with a few laughs along the way.

2. fictional: the comedy and mayhem of parenting in real life, £9.99

what it is: dummy is matt coyne’s top ten sunday times best-selling book. It’s a refreshingly honest yet positive take on a father’s life in a way he’ll be able to relate to.

why we love it: we love this book because matt is just a normal parent and his no-nonsense approach to describing the chaos, the hilarity, the failures and the successes should assure new parents that most of us stumble our way through parenthood. and that’s fine!

3. the father-to-be survival guide: everything you need to know, £9.17

– best for balancing humor and information

what it is: the survival guide for expectant parents by rob kemp is a veteran in the world of books for dads. The original was released in 2010, when there weren’t as many books for our tribe, but, packed with lots of information, advice, and real-life stories from other parents, it’s just as useful now as it was then.

Why We Love It: It’s the perfect balance of humor (it really made me laugh out loud) and detail. Some dad books tend to skim the surface when it comes to pregnancy, childbirth, and beyond, in favor of a laugh. Rob somehow manages to seamlessly switch between making the reader laugh and writing a paragraph about the perineum and episiotomy.

It’s always my personal recommendation to any father-to-be I meet.

4. all new dad jokes, £10.99

– best for a gift

what is it: what do you call a snowman with a six pack? an abdominal snowman.

if you thought it was funny and have an incessant need to share it with everyone, even though you know they won’t find it funny, then this book is for you. Written by Kit Chilvers, it’s unsurprisingly full of terrible dad jokes and could be the perfect gift for the budding comedian in your life.

Why We Love It: Because not all “books for dads” need to be serious reads meant to change your perspective on parenting. in fact, this book is a great reminder that your personality doesn’t completely disappear once you have children. If you used to tell bad jokes, why stop now?

5. hypnobirthing: practical ways to improve your labor, £14.99

– best for practical ways to support your partner

what it is: hypnobirthing may sound like a new era, but author and co-founder of positive birth company siobhan miller explains the rationale behind it (spoiler alert: she has nothing to hypnotism) as well as providing excellent comprehensive advice to help you and your partner enjoy a more positive birth.

Why We Love It: There is growing evidence and growing support for the hypnobirthing approach. And that’s the best way to look at it: a more positive approach to pregnancy, childbirth, and beyond. We thoroughly enjoyed Siobhan’s online courses and my partner certainly played a huge role in our smooth birthing experience.

Why We Love It: romesh offers a refreshingly brutally honest take on life as an adult and parent with his unique brand of somber humor and an air of disappointment at how things have turned out. While not strictly a book for dads, it is written by one and we loved reading about Romesh’s child-related challenges. ironically, we found it really uplifting!

Why We Love It: We love the wry humor found in this book, which aims to bring a little fun to parenting. some of the tricks are certainly unique, but parents praise them for how simple and innovative they are. 9. haynes explains babies, £6.25

– best for a stocking filler

what it is: haynes is famous the world over for his obsessively detailed automotive manuals and mechanical drawings. He has now turned his attention to little humans in this short but entertaining “workshop manual” for babies.

Why We Love It: Who Said There Wasn’t A Baby Manual? This 34-page Haynes explains that babies are great fun, wonderfully crafted, and make a fantastic tongue-in-cheek gift for any parent-to-be. handy sections include “assembly & production (pregnancy and birth)”, “fuel (food), “emission control systems (wind)” and more.

10. precious little sleep: the complete guide to baby sleep for modern parents, £11.20

– better for understanding baby’s sleep patterns

what it is: an excellent explanation of how babies sleep. And, yes, there is a little more than you think, which this book digs into to help you understand your baby’s sleep patterns and how they will change over time.

the author goes beyond the dichotomy that your baby switches between “asleep” and is the worst alarm clock you can imagine. instead, it teaches her how her baby’s sleep pattern is changing so she can change with him.

Why We Love It: There’s no perfect recipe for getting babies to sleep, but misunderstanding why they’re not sleeping can lead to more frustration because you may think you’re doing something wrong.

This book really could be the key to unlocking better sleep for you, your partner, and your baby. however, at a minimum, the knowledge gained should prevent you from blaming yourself or becoming overly frustrated.
