I am a Spanish speaker by birth, but I have been passionate about English for years. my secret tip to make faster progress with the language is to read a lot of novels in english and then read a few more. When it came to finding books that were both educational in terms of language level and interesting in their own right, I realized I had to go beyond the obvious choices and decided to make my own list.

This is not your current feminist manifesto. Caitlin Moran is a powerful and compelling writer and she doesn’t mince words. this book is perfect if you want to learn lingo, smash the patriarchy (as any good feminist would!), and laugh while doing it.

This is my favorite crime novel series. Myron Bolitar, a retired professional basketball player, solves crimes along with his eccentric best friend, Windsor “Win” Horne Lockwood III. this book is full of mysteries, since it’s a whodunit and all that, and sports slang. warning: if you’re one of those people who can’t put a book down once they’ve started, stay away from this one.
5. treasure island (by robert louis stevenson)
“yo ho ho and a bottle of rum”
This book doesn’t really need an introduction: it’s a true classic, complete with pirates, sailors, and adventures. It’s great for expanding your vocabulary, especially if you love to travel.
6. a thousand splendid suns (by khaled khosseini)
“marriage can wait, education cannot.”
This book offers a story like no other. Immerse yourself in the daily lives and struggles of Miriam and Laila as they struggle to find a future in Kabul. English is simple enough for most students, but still beautiful and challenging. and the book features characters you’ll never forget.
7. pride & prejudice (by jane austen)

“I could easily forgive his pride, had he not mortified mine.”
the pride of jane austen & prejudice is another classic. although the vocabulary is quite advanced, if you fancy a challenge, this is a perfect choice. oh, and i dare you not to fall in love with any of the characters, especially one mr. darcy.
8. to kill a mockingbird (by harper lee)
“You never really understand a person until you consider things from their point of view…until you get inside their skin and walk in it.”
a masterpiece of American literature that will help you understand the history of the United States. They say that a culture can only be understood through language, do you want to try it?
9. orientalism (by edward said)

for the intellectual who wants to see beyond stereotypes. If you have an advanced level of English, this book is an invaluable resource for understanding the world and the way we see ourselves. It’s also a great conversation starter when traveling, especially in the Middle East.
10. twilight (by stephenie meyer)
“and so the lion fell in love with the lamb…”
It may not be what you expected as the tenth, but it’s the first book I’ve read in English, so it has a special place in my heart. and I would wholeheartedly recommend it to any learner of English – it offers an entertaining story, and English is quite easy and simple. don’t judge a book by its movie.
