very much like real gre: official gre super power pack

The ETS Power Pack gives you three GRE books: The Official Guide to the GRE General Exam (3rd Edition), The Official GRE Quantitative Reasoning Practice Questions (2nd Edition), and The Official GRE Quantitative Reasoning Practice Questions (2nd Edition). Official GRE Verbal Reasoning Questions with Analytical Writing Practice (2nd Edition).

all these books are made by ets, the creators of the gre test. generally speaking, the official guide guides you through the test in general and each section, provides practice questions for verbal and Quantitative, a math content review, and two practice tests. the official practice question books for verbal/analytical and quantitative writing reprint some of the same guidance information, but provide additional official practice questions.

this set also comes with a cd with practice tests, but those tests are the same as the powerprep ii tests, so save yourself the trouble with the cd and just download powerprep ii directly for free.

price

about $40 for the full package; about $27 for the official guide, about $13 for the official quantitative reasoning practice questions, and about $12 for the official verbal reasoning practice questions. however, keep in mind that the most recent editions are very similar to the previous editions of all of these books, so if you can find the previous editions cheaper, you may want to go with them. p >

advantages

  • prep materials have one big advantage over all other prep materials: they include real, real gre questions. other prep books and companies do their best to mimic the format , content and style, and sometimes they come pretty close. but only ets can give you official gre questions. this makes the power pack a very valuable practice resource, because using ets questions gives you the most gre-like experience. And the closer your practice gets to real GRE, the more prepared you’ll be to tackle real GRE questions on test day.

See Also: Loren Estleman, author

cons

While ets has a big advantage, there are a few downsides to their material to be aware of:

  • Most of the information on testing strategies and tips is freely available online on the gre website. this also applies to the entire math content review section. so don’t expect you’ll get anything new there.
  • this gre book won’t teach you much in the way of tricks and strategies, you’ll need to use other resources for that. ets does not want to present the gre as a system that can be beaten, because it is their test, and to do so would undermine their own image as creators of a test that is highly predictive of success in graduate school.
  • some (but not all) of the practice questions can be found online. also, there is some (but not complete) overlap in the practice questions between the books.
  • sadly, the kindle edition is riddled with formatting errors, so get this as printed book. .
  • the explanations of the answers are not particularly exhaustive; it is not always clear how the correct answer was arrived at.

why get this gre prep book?

Despite its drawbacks, I recommend that most students at least get the official guide. This will give them two additional practice tests in addition to the powerprep software. the official ets tests are a great—and rare—resource that makes the official guide worthwhile for that alone.

if you think you really need all the official ets practice questions you can get your hands on (which is totally reasonable!), the powerpack is the way to go. just keep in mind that most of the content review and guidance information is freely available online. the main value you’ll get from these is the questions themselves.

best gre prep book for practice problems: manhattan prep 5 pound practice problem book

the manhattan 5 pound practice problem book provides over 1000 pages of practice problems and full explanations. Purchasing the book also grants you access to an online bank of additional questions, bringing the total number of questions you have access to north of 1,800.

Please note that this is not a practice test book. While there are some sample sections of GRE that you can take under timed conditions, the majority of the book has segmented practice questions. by section and skill. there is also no content review here, apart from the review inherent in the answer explanations.

price

about $16 (kindle and paperback)

See Also: Neal Shusterman – Book Series In Order

advantages

  • tons of gre type questions specifically ordered by different skills, section and difficulty level. this allows you to drill down to very specific areas of weakness.
  • very detailed step-by-step answer explanations to help you know exactly how to get to the right choice.
  • access to online question banks will help you practice answering the questions in a computer, which is how you’ll take the real gre.
  • ideas on how to approach examples of analytical writing prompts.

See Also: Neal Shusterman – Book Series In Order

See Also: Loren Estleman, author

cons

  • Please note that there are many more quantitative questions than verbal or analytical written questions. this isn’t necessarily a scam, but something to be aware of.
  • you may get stuck on the sheer number of questions here. don’t feel like you need to get them to complete all the questions of the book.
  • Some of the easier math questions may be too easy given how much gre likes “hard” questions.
  • There is a vocabulary list at the return without definitions. this seems a bit out of scope since the book is really meant to provide practice problems specifically.

best gre books for a comprehensive program: manhattan prep gre set of 8 strategy guides

The set includesa whopping 8 gre books on proofreading and content preparation (most are pretty sparse, but still). six of the eight books cover the major math content areas and question types: algebra, fractions/decimals/percents, geometry, number properties, word problems, and a guide to quantitative comparison and data interpretation question types . the other two books are on verbal and analytical writing. one book is about reading comprehension and essay writing, and the other is about text completion questions and sentence equivalence.

all books start with the same “intro to gre” chapter before getting to the main content. this is a bit repetitive within the context of the set, so I imagine these introductory chapters are included so that those who purchase the gre books individually can get their bearings in the test.

If you don’t need the full set, you can also purchase the books individually. however, getting the full program is the best value. Purchasing this set (or any manhattan prep book) gives you 1-year access to six GRE practice exams adaptable to the online section.

See Also: Loren Estleman, author

price

about $96 for eight books; individual books for $12-15

advantages

  • this is an extremely comprehensive and in-depth book based gre prep program. it is absolutely the most comprehensive prep book system on the market, with strong content review, tons of practice questions and strategies to tackle each section.
  • practice problems have very comprehensive and detailed answer explanations.
  • this set gives you access to six online sections : adaptive testing. This is a really amazing practice for real gre, which is also piecewise adaptive. once you run out of ets practice tests, these are a valuable resource.
  • test-taking strategies (and section-specific strategies) are helpful in approaching the test.

See Also: Neal Shusterman – Book Series In Order

See Also: Loren Estleman, author

cons

  • As you can see from the difference in the pages devoted to the various topics, this set is more complete for quantification than the other two sections. this is something to keep in mind mind if you anticipate having difficulty with verbal language.
  • there are some typos in the math practice problems.
  • this review may be too comprehensive; it is possible to feel overwhelmed by the large amount of content. You really need to be aware of where you spend your time to make the most of every hour of preparation.
  • Some of your test-taking strategies can be too specific. you should test the strategies they suggest to find out what works best for you and modify your overall strategy as needed.

why get this gre book?

If you have a lot of time to devote to a comprehensive prep program and want it to come practically pre-built, this manhattan prep gre set is a great investment. if the trial is in three weeks, don’t bother, you’ll just be overwhelmed by all the content.

You can also buy a subset of the books to focus on a specific content area or section. For example, if you’re good at quantity but want to go deeper into verbal, you could buy the two verbally focused books. this will also give you access to the six section-adaptable online tests.
