7. enemies abroad by r. yes gray

It’s simple: Noah Peterson and I are enemies. Our fellow teachers know it, our friends know it, even the starbucks drive-thru lady knows it, as every Monday she scribbles the name a. hole for me at noah’s cappuccino when I pick up the weekly group order. The high-pitched wail of the school bell heralds the start of each day’s no-holds-barred grudge match. Since none of us are looking to be fired or jailed, we wage war with our words and wits. we prefer jokes that bite. All day, I’m nervous, looking around every corner, hoping he’ll do the worst. Just when I think I can’t take my eyes off his (sadly) beautiful face for one more minute, the school day is over. Summer usually offers the sweetest relief, a two-month Noah detox, but not this year. “we need two volunteers to chaperone a group of eighth graders in rome” becomes a game of chicken that none of us is willing to lose. we both want that bonus check. “Back off,” I tell him. “afraid?” he scoffs. no one thinks it’s a good idea for us to go to rome together, least of all me. taking this battle abroad will only lead to chaos and misery.

In general, the person in charge of these things shouldn’t fantasize about setting fire to the entire three-ring dating circus. Who does the cocky suit think he is? … god? actually, he looked like a god. that was it. when the stop came for him, he suddenly got up and left. so all of a sudden, he dropped his phone on the way out. she could have picked it up. he could have gone through all the pictures of him and called some of the numbers. I could have kept the mystery man’s phone for days, until I finally worked up the courage to return it. when I walked my butt across town into his elegant company, he refused to see me. So, I left the phone on the empty desk outside the arrogant jerk’s office. however, she did not expect him to reply to the text message. I didn’t expect our exchanges to be as hot as hell. it hadn’t been more different. however, you know what they say about opposites. when we finally meet face to face, we discover that opposites sometimes do more than attract each other: we consumed each other. nothing could have prepared me for the journey he took me on and I certainly wasn’t prepared for where I would end up when the journey was over. all good things must come to an end, right? except our ending was one I didn’t see coming.
