Each November, when hundreds of photographers and artists converge on the French capital for paris photography, photobook enthusiasts gather to celebrate the year’s best productions at events like the paris photo-foundation photobook awards. aperture, which has established itself as the leading photography award for books and reprints, a popular independent publishing fair.
this is usually the time when, here at the time, we work on our own list of the best photobooks of the year, selected by a committee of photography writers, editors, and curators.

however, when we interviewed more than 35 photography experts, one book in particular came up several times: moses by mariela sancari. Selected by susan bright, larissa leclair and erik kessels, and mentioned by many others, moses offers a clever take on the design to reinforce your message . “Many artists return to themes such as love, birth and death in their works. the best convey a unique and personal quality to these universals. the moisés de mariela sancari project was born from the death of her father, and specifically from not being able to see his body. She still doesn’t know why that was, maybe it was due to the cause of death (suicide) or related to her family’s religious beliefs,” Kessels explained to Time in an email. “To find closure, Mariela placed a classified ad with an old portrait of her father. she asked men her father’s age to study the image of her and contact her if they saw a resemblance. Despite the unusual nature of the request, she got the help she needed.”
for bright, moses is simply extraordinary: “no other book this year has come even remotely close to the power of moses for me.”

These are just some of the 36 books that have been selected by our experts from around the world and photo editors at the time. Far from being an exhaustive list, these are personal choices made with the agonizing rule of selecting a single photobook to represent 2015 in its entirety.
