The top tier of pw’s kids’ bestseller charts is dominated by best-selling series like wimpy kid and dork diaries, and media-driven properties, including movie tie-ins, a wildly popular video game and a couple of youtube stars. The adult coloring book craze has reached children’s books, with two titles by Johanna Basford at the top of our children’s non-fiction list. and in picture books, the tried and true rule. These lists are based on data from Nielsen Bookscan, which tracks print sales at participating outlets. While the top-tier children’s fiction category remains strong, there was a slight decline (3%) from last year’s sales, reflecting the lack of a new hit, a la John Green. The Wimpy Kid franchise, however, is still going strong: the last installment, The Long Haul, was the only top-tier fiction title to sell over a million copies in 2015 (Paper Towns, a 2008 novel, also surpassed that mark, with its two editions). Movie tie-ins also play a big role in this category: Book sales for three movies (Paper Towns, Descendants, and Scorching Trials) totaled more than two million copies. and another future film, miss peregrine’s home for peculiar children (#6 on our list), will be released this christmas.

jokes and schoolyards go together like peanut butter and jelly, and revell’s various compendiums of jokes were a big hit last year. Look for more coloring books along the lines of the hugely popular Secret Garden and Enchanted Forest. raina telgemeier continues her reign as queen of the middle grade graphic novel. the minecraft category continues to expand, and the success of the amazing book is not on fire reflects the trend of youtube stars transitioning to print.

one thing you can count on: each year brings with it new babies and new young readers. In our 2015 picture book list, eight of the top 10 titles are perennial retrospective favorites. new generations of readers love dr. seuss as well as the previous ones: there were four seuss titles on the list, including the newly released, which pet should i get? and the two colored pencil books by drew daywalt and oliver jeffers have all the makings of a future classic property.
