if you’ve never read a movie novel, matthew stofer’s revenge of the sith is the perfect place to start.

but wait, why is the revenge of the sith novelization an honorable mention? the point is that it is not strictly a book of legends.
stover incorporates bits of legend: lots of discussion about lightsaber shapes, mace windu’s breaking ability, and lots of references to james luceno’s labyrinth of evil, for example. however, it is the intent of the novelizations to exist in the gray area between canon and something else: what happened in the movies from a certain point of view. More than any other novel, Revenge of the Sith does exactly that.
instead of a step-by-step film adaptation, stofer was allowed to take certain liberties with the story with the blessing of george lucas himself, notably changing minor plot points and dialogue .

the legacy of the force series by aaron allston, karen traviss and troy denning
Few characters in legend novels are more fully developed than Han and Leia’s son, Jacen Alone. If you love epic and historical character arcs, this is the series for you. jacen’s early history is chronicled in the new jedi order series, but that line is a huge commitment to read to the end (19 books!), so we recommend skimming through the wookiepedia article if you want to better appreciate the rise and Jacen’s fall from grace. before jumping into this series.

timothy zahn scoundrels
When his reward for rescuing Princess Leia is stolen, Han finds himself deeply in debt to Jabba the Hutt and takes a dangerous job of robbing a crime lord in Wukkar in order to pay it off. Assembling a top-notch team to pull off the heist, including the likes of Lando Calrissian, Han leads the group of con artists to steal, cheat and cajole through one of their biggest bets. Zahn writes a decidedly different book from his Thrawn-centric novels, but his understanding of the characters and a big payoff in Act 3 make this a defining solo story.

karen traviss republic commando series
If you love gritty Star Wars battles and tactical military operations, the Republic Commando series has you covered. A spin-off of the hit video game Republic Commando, this line follows Omega and Delta Squads on deadly missions through the Clone Wars all the way to Order 66.
Karen Traviss is known for her incredible development of Mandalorian culture, possibly contributing more to the lore than any other creator, and she really shines in this series. Unfortunately, the series was abruptly canceled after the fourth book, so while readers are left with a complete story, they may always be wondering what happened to so many beloved characters.
