I’m so excited for fall! Riley has grown up, and especially now that she has become a little girl, I love exploring all that each season has to offer! and fall has a lot to offer.

I love helping her learn and also reiterate the fall things we do when reading books. I love to see how it “clicks” for her, which is one of my mother’s greatest joys, besides cuddling and reading books. In that spirit, I thought it was time to share some of our favorite fall books for young children – only the best picture books to get them into that fall mood and help your child learn and interact with all that fall has to offer. has to offer in 2021.

my fall reading list for the toddler age range avoids all things scary! it will be fun to see if riley likes scary books like i do when she grows up, but for now my halloween & Fall board book selections won’t be scary.

I have so many things on our fall wish list and reading these fall-themed picture books with my newborn 2-year-old is just about the best. We’ve already enjoyed exploring some pumpkin and apple orchards, so I hope our reading list will complement all the fall fun we’ll have during this toddler stage!

i’m breaking down at what age riley enjoyed these books just to give you an idea of whether or not i think they’re for toddlers or older kids. It’s not definitive or anything, but I like to see that sort of thing when I’m looking for children’s books, so I thought I’d help break it down!

This is a cute little book about a mouse experiencing fall for the first time: discovering leaves and their colors and shapes and the joy of jumping on leaves. definitely want to read this and do some nature walks in the fall.

oh, this is the cutest book about a girl and her grandfather enjoying autumn together.

good night pumpkin

I got this one on a whim and was pleasantly surprised! very cute fall book with zero scares! a perfect little tale to share in the fall!

leaves by david ezra stein

This is the cutest book! we got this from the library and it’s a winner if you’re looking for leaf themed picture books! seriously, so cute to see the bear’s first fall and his confusion about the leaves falling and then after hibernating coming back out to see new budding leaves. a good primer on the changing of the seasons and why the leaves fall.

apples & pumpkins

i had to grab this one because this year we’re going to be collecting apples and pumpkins of all kinds with riley and it’s fun to be able to do the things that are in the book! I was looking for books about apples for toddlers to add to my list and this one seems to fit the bill. just a cute little book about a girl who has a full fall day picking apples and pumpkins with her family.

pete the cat – five pumpkins

I love pete the cat! the kids me babysitter and i fell in love with those books and then they gave pete the cat twinkle twinkle little star to riley at my baby shower and now it’s one of her favorite books so i’m a little excited to talk to pete the cat . i love this book and it was a hit with the preschoolers i babysat and it’s a hit with riley!
