are you an ant

are you an ant? by judy allen and tudor humphries

I really love this book. Like the others in the Backyard Book series, it takes a very creative approach to teaching nonfiction to children from preschool through third grade, in language that makes sense to them. the authors speak directly to the reader, as if he were an ant. go out to find food. seeds are pretty so are bugs and wood lice. springtails are delicious, but difficult to catch because they jump… actually, you’re not a very good hunter. look for bugs that have been stepped on. they’re easy. informative, fun + great illustrations = a big win!

Theres an Alligator Under My Bed

there’s an alligator under my bed, by mercer mayer

My kids often request this silly story about a kid whose parents don’t think he has an alligator under his bed. he solves the problem himself by creating a food trail that leads the alligator out of the house. I think for most kids, this book will help allay night terrors… but if you have a particularly fearful child, you may not want to give them new ideas!

icky sticky anteater

the disgusting and sticky anteater, by dawn bentley

It’s hard to be an anteater when you don’t like ants. In this rhyming story, an anteater tries to do what his friends do, but learns it’s better to be himself.

hooray for amanda

hooray for amanda and her alligator, by mo willems

Here’s a fabulous book from the author of the popular pigeon books (as well as the elephant and pig series). willems has created another simple and fun book that children and adults alike will enjoy reading again and again. This is a collection of stories about Amanda and her stuffed alligator, like the day the alligator finds a price tag on her story and is devastated to learn it was only seven cents.

anteater named arthur

an anteater named arturo, by bernard waber

I can’t believe it took me this long to discover this ancient book! published nearly fifty years ago, it’s still a great story. No, it is not related to the popular Arthur books and TV series created by Marc Brown. Instead, it’s a book told by a mother anteater about her son Arthur, who sometimes (“not all the time, mind you”) is a problem. like the time when she refuses to eat her red ants, because she only likes the brown ones. I can’t do this book justice in a review. I hope you find it yourself!

apple farmer annie

annie the apple farmer by monica wellington

There are so many children’s books about apples, but not many as simple and sweet as this one. This is perfect for preschoolers to learn how apples get from the tree to the kitchen.

baby alligator, by ginjer l. clarke

This book, and others in the All Aboard Reading series, are great for older preschoolers who love learning about the world. If you have a child who is always asking questions, you know what I mean. Your preschooler will learn lots of interesting facts about alligators, like the fact that they can have up to 6,000 teeth in their lifetime and grow as big as a pickup truck.

zack’s alligator, by shirley mozelle

This is a book we own and I’ve read it more times than I can count. Zack receives an alligator keychain in the mail from his uncle. When he waters it, he turns into a brave, full-grown alligator named Bridget. my kids love hearing about zack and bridget’s adventures… over and over and over again.

apples, apples, apples

apples, apples, apples, by nancy elizabeth wallace

We love the cutout paper illustrations in this book about a family of rabbits visiting an apple orchard. children will learn about the parts of an apple, how an apple tree grows, and how to make applesauce. There are even apple sayings (“an apple a day keeps the doctor away”) and an apple song at the end of the book.

apple pie book

how to make an apple pie and see the world, by marjorie freeman

Read this book with a globe by your side! making an apple pie is easy, unless the market is closed and you have to travel the world to find the ingredients! Go to Italy for wheat, Sri Lanka for cinnamon, Jamaica for salt, and many more exciting destinations. what a creative and funny story!

hey, little ant

My kids love this book about a giant boy who is about to squash a tiny ant. it’s sure to inspire conversations about whether or not we should make a game out of squashing bugs.

ten apples up on top

ten apples on top, from theo. lesseig

did you know theo? lesieg was a pseudonym for dr. seuss? This is a favorite book about a lion, a tiger, and a dog competing to see who can balance the most apples on their heads. It’s also a great book for beginning readers for kids learning high-frequency words. dr seuss did an amazing job telling interesting stories with basic words. “And now, look here. eight! eight on top! eight apples up! none will fall.” don’t miss it!

apple pie tree

the apple pie tree, by zoe hall

Colourful collage art takes you through the seasons of a backyard apple tree, from a bare, brown winter to a ripe red fall…and a delicious apple pie you grew yourself.

alexander and the terrible

alexander and the terrible, horrible, not good, very bad day, by judith viorst

This classic book (published over 40 years ago, I can hardly believe it!) was one of my favorites growing up. I could totally relate to all the things that ruined alexander’s day, one of which would be lima beans for dinner. curiously, the book does not solve itself, except that his mother tells him that “some days are like that”. But reading this with her son could start a wonderful dialogue about how to handle everyday challenges.

alligator purse

the lady with the crocodile bag, illustrated by nadine bernard westcott

we love songbooks so my kids are big fans of the silly song about a baby named tiny tim trying to eat a bathtub. miss lucy calls the doctor, the nurse… and the lady with the crocodile purse!
