Books galore!

create an obstacle course with books. children can, for example, walk around the shelves. add obstacles like a ruler or dictionary that the children have to jump over, two chairs that they have to crawl under, etc. incorporate items you have. you could use a small slide and place cushions from your reading nook at the bottom. try to encourage children to move in a variety of ways (crawl, jump, turn, back up, etc.). Older kids will enjoy helping you build the obstacle course.

Use colored masking tape to draw a simple path on the ground. add a balance beam, cones, etc. children must complete the path while balancing a book on their head. if the book falls, they must stop and put it back before continuing.

When you go for a walk, ask the children to find two medium-sized rocks. when you return to the nursery, place a container filled with water on the floor. let the children wash their stones in the container. When they’re done, put the rocks out to dry. once they are dry, let the kids paint their rocks and sprinkle glitter on them. when dry, kids can use them as bookends.

relay race book

You will need two backpacks (one per team), two bags that hold the same amount of books, and two empty containers that you will place at the opposite end of your nursery. Divide your group into two teams. Kids take turns pulling a book out of their team bag, placing it in their team backpack, and carrying it to its bin at the other end of the room before running back to hand the backpack to the next kid in line. The first team to transport all their books wins.

With your group, manipulate the different types of paper and perform different tests:

absorption: which paper absorbs liquids better? spray water on each and compare the results.
strength: which paper is the easiest to tear? which one is stronger?
stains: manipulate the papers and look at your hands to see if they stain your skin.
textures: compare the different textures.
clear or opaque: can you see through the papers?

culinary activities

my cake book

Make a store-bought cake mix with your group. bake in rectangular pan (you may need two cake mixes). once the cake is ready, let it cool and divide the rectangle into 4 or 6 smaller rectangles that will represent books. Prepare several different colors of icing and let the kids decorate their cake book as they wish. provide candy that they can use to decorate their books. eat them for dessert.

Place several supermarket flyers in your kitchen area. have the children cut out the foods they like best. laminate them and stick a small magnet behind each one. children will enjoy playing with the food magnets on a magnetic board.

book painting

You will need string, old books you no longer want to use (they should be fairly thick) or phone books, folded sheets of white paper, and poster paint. To start, the children should dip a piece of string into the paint (each child can use one or more pieces), leaving about 2 inches unpainted at one end. have them place their folded sheet of white paper in an open book (with the fold aligned with the fold of the book). then have them place the string(s) between the two layers of paper, with the unpainted part sticking out above the book. have them close their book and press the cover down before gently pulling on the strings. When they’re done, let them open their book to discover a unique masterpiece.
