this is the first novel written by brian mcgilloway and was published in 2007. the title borderlands refers to the area between eire and northern ireland. in the introductory part, the body of a teenage girl is found in the border area, which is also known as a modern no man’s land and two police detectives from each side of the border have to make a decision about who will take the case . it turns out that the girl lives in lifford, where inspector general devlin of the garda comes from, well; he becomes the winner of this grim award. his opponent jim hendry of the north becomes the loser. Basically, the next two hundred pages are a set of proceedings during the coming days of Christmas and New Years; a critical investigation that is hampered by weather, vacations and a lack of coordination between the southern and northern administrations acting as witnesses, suspects and the lack of substantive evidence in the towns, hamlets and fields of the sinuous border to both sides.

Although after reading the last quarter of the novel it is relatively easy to figure out who is responsible for the deaths and the reasons that led to such deaths, McGilloway keeps the reader guessing whose identity until the very end.

this is brian mcgilloway’s second novel published in 2008. it is a quiet and satisfying novel that delivers on all the promises of the plot; providing a strong judgment of humanity and leaving readers searching for more and more. In this novel, the main character is Ben Devlin from Lifford Garda. Although Lifford appears to be a small town south of the Irish border, it surprisingly has a lot of crime. in the chapters, an old cache of weapons is found in a forest, and a young woman is again attacked and killed in a house that was still under construction on a farm. a pharmacy is also robbed, a woman denounces a prowler in her garden. On top of this, Devlin is ordered by his boss who is a Costello superintendent to make sure that a certain local man named Jim Kerr, who just got out of jail after serving time for armed robbery, disappears from the neighborhood, since he’s a big problem.
devlin is involved in office politics as he tries to cope with these changing events. Superintendent Costello is approaching his retirement shift and so encourages Devlin to apply for this job. Surprisingly, this seems to bother his colleagues Colhoun and Patterson. They are the ones who discovered the secret cache of weapons, but specifically Patterson. Patterson, who is the older partner of the pair, becomes one of Devlin’s biggest rivals for the position.
the strength of the novel is basically reflected in the plot, particularly ben devlin’s local knowledge. In fact, Debbie, Devlin’s wife, is quite shapeless and her children are, to some extent, idealized. Devlin’s stronger feelings for Caroline pose a great danger to his marriage; Readers won’t find it easy to believe that Devlin might leave his wife for Caroline Williams.
