Audiobooks and read-alouds really help reluctant readers to dig into the text. besides, listening to a good British reader is so delicious! (there are also great audiobook readers for the hobbit, you should try it).

- choose youtube and read alouds for poetry. there’s nothing like a great British speaker or actor reciting British poetry! YouTube videos can really bring poetry to life for the average high school student studying at home. i have a pinterest board where british readers submit lots of great poems. use movies or TV shows whenever possible for more challenging books like a Christmas carol or sense and sensibility.
many average high school students are visual learners. Whenever possible, show your teens a movie version of the book before they read it. this is not cheating. you’re tapping into your teens’ learning styles.

- sense and sensibility (1995)
- the hobbit (peter jackson series)
- a tale of two cities (1958)
- a christmas carol (see various versions, including the muppet version)
- sherlock holmes (how many different movies and tv shows are there? want to have some fun? watch several and have a compare/contrast discussion) .
- jeeves and wooster (this is a lovely bbc series that ran for 3 seasons. the scripts follow the books closely. kick back and enjoy all 3 seasons! then read just one book. try hard , jeeves and do our 7 sisters literature study guide.)
- all creatures big and small (another one of my bbc family’s favorite tv series. the first few seasons are a lot alike too to the books).
- pride and prejudice (see various versions and compare/contrast)
- treasure island (see various versions and compare/contrast)
- mr d e the rings (peter jackson series)
how to turn all this into a british literature credit for homeschool transcript?
earning average level credit for homeschool transcript is simple:
- reading books (either by audio, reading aloud, or actual reading of the book by the teen). Here’s a post that guides choices on how many books to read based on age, interest, and ability. There are also instructions in the 7sisters literature study guides.
- Then log hours on study guide work, movies or TV shows, family discussions, and document writing. log as many or as few hours as fits your family’s needs and meet the requirements your supervising organization advises you (if you have one).
- don’t overdo it! no need to keep up with honors level students! it’s right to do the right thing for your teens. After all, there is no one right way to study at home in high school.
Studying British literature will help your teens gain confidence that they understand their cultural roots. It will broaden your perspectives on life. enjoy!
