again, if you have children in grades 5 & For those of you who haven’t read any of the books on the above lists, I recommend that you read them as well. I’ve tried to include books on these lists that appeal to a wide audience, which works great for those homeschooling children across a variety of ages. generally those in kindergarten and grade 1 & 2 lists will need to be read aloud (or listened to on audio) and then when they reach grades 3, 4, 5, and 6, they can read the books on their own lists and the above lists on their own, or they can go on to read them aloud. reading aloud is great for the whole family.

the adventures of tom sawyer

The classic, in all its glory, though what many forget is how well this tale of American childhood holds up even after nearly 150 years. Tom Sawyer, his best friend Huck Finn, his future girlfriend Becky Thatcher, and their Aunt Polly teach and learn about life, death, race, and fence painting in a “typical” 19th-century Midwestern town that has a striking resemblance to the two’s hometown of Hannibal, Missouri. On one level, this is the quintessential story of a boy’s innocence and how he lost it, but it’s also a profound evocation of national character that two, an odd combination of independent thinker and moralist, clearly thought needed a bit of analysis.

Come aboard for the swashbuckling adventure of a lifetime. Treasure Island has captivated (and caused mild dizziness) for decades. The names Long John Silver and Jim Hawkins are destined to remain a part of folklore as long as children want to read Robert Louis Stevenson’s most famous book. With its dastardly plot and motley crew of rogues and villains, it seems unlikely kids will say no to this timeless classic.

huckleberry finn adventures

huckleberry finn is the original american hipster. choose the things that are most comfortable for you, regardless of what others say. But when he is forced to flee his home and enters the company of Jim, a runaway slave, his healthy heart collides with his ill-bred conscience. Together, Huck and Jim travel down the Mississippi River on an odyssey that has become one of the greatest classics in American literature.
