write absolutely anything you can think of: words, phrases, names, places, adjectives: the works. you’ll be amazed at the amount of actionable content that comes out of such a strange exercise.

2. experiment with word patterns

obviously we’re not advocating plagiarism, but try playing with formats like:

“the _____ of _______”

“______ and the _____”

These will work for certain genres, although they are by no means the only patterns you can play with. Have you noticed how many blockbusters these days include the word “woman” or “girl” somewhere in the title?

3. get inspired by your characters

If your main character has a quirky name or title (like a doctor or detective), you can definitely incorporate that into your book title. Just look at Jane Eyre, Percy Jackson, or Harry Potter for example – working with one or more of their character names is a sure way to get some title ideas. likewise, you can add a little detail, like thomas hardy’s jude the dark, to add some color to a name and make it worthy of a title.

4. take into account your configuration

Is your book set in a particularly interesting or significant place? Even if your title isn’t just where the action takes place (like George Eliot’s MiddleMarch), it’s something to keep in mind. you can include other details, such as the wizard of oz from him. frank baum or picnic at hanging rock by joan lindsay, to give readers a sense of action and character, as well as the setting (which tend to be linked).

5. search for ideas of book titles in famous phrases

Think of Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird here: this is a central symbol and an important part of the dialogue in the novel. it’s enigmatic (what does it even mean? is it a warning? an instruction?) and really makes us nervous when these words appear in the text itself. try to think of your inspiration for writing your book or summarize your central theme in a few words, and see if this inspires anything.

6. parse book titles of other books

You may be surprised how many books reference other works in their titles (John Green’s The Fault in Our Stars is from Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, and Steinbeck’s from Mice and Men is inspired by in a poem by robert burns). Following this path allows authors to use an already beautiful and poetic turn of phrase that alludes to a theme in their own book. from ernest hemingway for whom the bell tolls to his philip pullman dark materials, many books have used this technique that might work for you too.

7. don’t forget the subtitle

In nonfiction publications, there’s a tendency for evocative or abstract titles, followed by a subtitle that communicates the content (and is packed with delicious keywords that the amazon search engine can’t resist). this is also another way to avoid long titles and to add a little flair to an otherwise dry topic. In the US, it’s also quite common to have “a novel” as a subtitle (yes, you know, it’s a novel). In the UK, this practice is much rarer.
