goldy shulz (née bear): satisfying the mystery
The main character in all of Diane Mott Davidson’s novels is Goldy Shulz. Goldy is a supplier who lives in the fictional town of Aspen Meadows. she is recently divorced and is trying to make a decent living for herself and hers little son.
the number of novels has increased, as has the number of characters that interact with goldy and affect her on a professional and personal scale. this makes goldy an interesting and constantly evolving character.

this is our first look at the life of goldy bear (shulz) and his son arch. the novel involves goldy attending his son’s teacher’s wake, it’s not a big concert, but it’s pretty simple. Trouble begins when Goldy’s ex-father-in-law, Fritz Korman, drinks from a poisoned goblet at the wake.

goldy is accused of the act and decides to get to the bottom of the mystery herself. She meets a myriad of characters, including the loving Tom Shulz who is courting her. In the end, with the help of her son, Ella Arch, and by searching for connections between Fritz, the deceased professor, and almost everyone in town, she solves the mystery.

In the second installment of the series, we are once again transported to Aspen Meadows, Colorado. goldy is worried that her abusive ex-husband, dr. Korman, or the asshole as Goldy likes to call him, will make good on her renewed threats. This leads her to install a security system, causing her and Arch to move into General Bo Farquhar’s mansion to spend the summer as cooks.
The general is an eccentric retired expert on ammunition and terrorism. The novel also sees the introduction of a new love for Goldy in the form of an old flame, psychologist Philip Miller. This puts Tom Shulz on the back burner, but soon Miller is involved in a horrific head-on collision and is killed. Goldy, who was following Philip at the time, suspects foul play and uses his skill set to get to the bottom of the mystery.

there are many endearing qualities in the novels that diane mott davidson produces. all are easy-to-read, even-paced, flowing works with a quirky, memorable character and an original heroine. this would be enough for most readers to pick up one of her novels, but there is a hidden aspect to these books that makes them that much more delightful.
goldilocks catering is a running business. is the catering company for the wealthy citizens of aspen meadows colorado. the premise of the novels is based on precisely this aspect of his life. The idea of a single-parent caterer solving mysteries should be enough to get most people interested in the novel, but the fact that the dishes Goldy makes are provided as recipes within the novel is wonderful.

This is a really original idea, plus the recipes are really good. I tried the no cater mayonnaise and guacamole and found them easy and delicious. here we really enter into the loves of the writer. Diane Mott Davidson not only weaves wonderfully entertaining stories, she manages to incorporate his love of cooking into his work.
Honestly trying the recipes gives a different layer to the story. actually, you get a little bit into the fiction by being able to taste what the characters enjoy on the page. this makes the process more than just a reading experience.
In an indirect way, it brings the element of taste to literature. this was a concept only achieved through cookbooks, which lack the narrative quality of a good novel. there has been a change in the way these recipes are presented.
In the first 11 novels, the recipes were woven into the story, but with the release of double shot, they were compiled and placed at the end of the novel. I personally enjoyed discovering a recipe within the story itself. diane mott davidson took an idea and executed it.
He has published 16 books in the goldy shulz series and shows no signs of stopping. The novels have become required reading for most of his fans, some of whom have been following Goldy’s exploits since the 1990s.
It’s amazing that an author can keep a character fresh and relevant over a 25-year period, but Diane Mott Davidson has done just that. I’m sure there are still some mysteries to be solved in Aspen Meadows, Colorado, and I think we all know the perfect caterer to do it.
