back in season 1, we found out that geralt’s horse is called roach. From there, we’ve seen Geralt traveling the continent with Roach by his side. This was true even until Season 2, when he started traveling with Ciri, as both Geralt and the Princess rode cockroaches during their travels.
however, in the witcher season 2 episode 6, we see geralt and ciri traveling to the temple of melitele to go see nenneke so they can understand the abilities that ciri can do. on the way to the temple, they were in the forest. However, Geralt suddenly stopped and warned Ciri to stay close to the cockroach because she sensed that some kind of chernobog was nearby.
Note that this species of chernobog, which is a winged dragon-like creature, was first seen in the chasm that opened up near the toppled monolith in Cintra. It appeared when Ciri used her powers in Kaer Morhen, as he might have sensed the princess’s powers and was on his way to find her.
When Geralt tried to kill the chernobog-like creature, he tried to get to Ciri before finally retreating. however, he got to the cockroach first before getting to the princess. The attack of the Chernobog creature left the cockroach mortally wounded, since Geralt needed to kill the horse out of mercy to end his suffering.
In short, we saw the cockroach die at the hands of the chernobog in season 2. But although many viewers were saddened by the loss of the horse, does it also happen in the books? cockroach also dies in the witcher books?

The first thing you should know about the cockroach is that this is the name Geralt gives to all of his horses. Geralt prefers brown mares. So, that means all of his horses are actually named Roach. It also means that when a horse expires or dies, the next horse to enter Geralt’s service is also called a Roach.
Given the fact that the warlock spans decades and that horses generally won’t live long when in the service of a warlock due to how dangerous the job is, we can assume that there have been many horses that have been in the service of a warlock. of geralt both in the books and in the series. all those horses are called roach. how did the creators decide the fate of the cockroach?

Those who haven’t read the books or played the games probably don’t know that Geralt names all of his horses Cockroach. this could possibly mean that they believe roach has lived for decades since season 1 episode 1, which is more than five decades before the events of season 2. so in a way the writers felt they were already getting over the limits of reality because not everyone knew that all the horses that geralt owns are called roach. And, if you must know, horses typically don’t live for more than three decades.
in that sense, killing the cockroach allowed the writers to show that geralt gets new horses from time to time when the old one dies or expires. It’s also a good way to show that Geralt names each horse cockroach.
