this is the first of all the dirk pitt stories, however this often leads to some confusion, because it was not the first story to be published. It’s the sixth book in the series based on publication dates, but Clive Cussler wrote this Pitt story before any of the others.
clive cussler has not only confirmed that he wrote this story first, but has stated that it is something of an exception to the series. he still hadn’t fully found his writing style, so he believes this is published more as a part of the story than part of the series. he feels that dirk pitt really finds his place in the future stories of the series.
In this first story, Dirk is sitting having fun on the beach in Oahu when he sees something floating in the water; swimming to find out what it could be, he discovers that it is a communication device used to send messages between ships and submarines. inside message: word of starbuck, a u.s. Navy nuclear submarine that had inexplicably disappeared in the vortex of the Pacific more than 30 years ago.

In this adventure, Dirk Pitt is forced to infiltrate an international drug trafficking network, which is led by a former German pilot who fought in the world wars.
dirk pitt, along with his best friend and trusted comrade al giordino, are traveling on their own mission in the aegean sea (where this particular adventure takes place), when they come across a distress call from the base of the brady air force apparently there is an old german plane from the first world war, an old-fashioned plane with low speed and very little skill, that is attacking the base strafing runways and shooting at stationary vehicles. Dirk Pitt and Al Giordino engage in a dogfight with the German venue, before walking away with victory in their hands.
This is how the adventure begins. The story continues with more excitement and attacks as Dirk Pitt is forced to settle with the evil Bruno von Till, who turns out to be the mastermind behind the drug smuggling organization that is causing all the trouble. It’s a long and complex story with many twists and turns that will surprise readers, as is typical of all Dirk Pitt adventure stories.

Iceberg is the next story in the long and winding series of dirk pitt adventure novels. This time he is forced to leave his vacation early as he is needed for a top secret mission involving a ship that crashed into an iceberg sometime in the past.
As usual, he and his comrade Al Giordino set out in search of answers to this mysterious set of events, this time under the command of Admiral Sandecker, who becomes a returning regular in the adventures of Dirk Pitt and others. Giordino.
This is only the third installment (the second by some people’s standards) in the series and there are dozens more novels after this one, documenting the adventures of dirk and al while working for the government on top secret missions, to often risking their lives to defend the world from evil.
