Elmer Kelton (born April 29, 1926 – August 22, 2009) was an American writer and journalist best known for his western novels. He was born in a place known as Horse Camp located at Five Wells Ranch in Andrews County and his parents are Robert William Kelton and Net Beatrice Kelton.
when kelton was about three years old, his family moved to the mcelroy ranch located in upton and crane counties, texas, adjacent to the town of crane and southwest midland. she spent the rest of her childhood on three different farms in mcelroy, where her father worked for 36 years. After graduating from Crane High School, Kelton joined the University of Texas from 1942 to 1944, 1946 to 1948, where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in journalism. Subsequently, he served in the United States Army from 1944 to 1946, where he was exposed to World War II.

Kelton married Anni Lipp of Austria, and they were blessed with three children, one of whom was Anni’s son whom Kelton adopted. The other two were a daughter and a son, namely Kathy Kelton and Steve Kelton. The author also had three brothers, Bill Kelton, Merle Kelton, and Eugene Kelton.
From 1948 to 1963, Kelton worked as a farm and ranch editor at Harte-Hanks for San Angelo Standard Time. For five years he also worked as one of the editorial staff for Sheep and Goat Breeders Magazine, and for more than two decades he also worked for Livestock Weekly as an editor, retiring in 1990. Kelton Memoir, Sandhills Boy was published in 2007, and three of his books have appeared in the Reader’s Digest Condensed Books. Eight of Kelton’s books have won the Western Writers of America Spur Prize. The Fellow Western Writers of America named him the greatest Western writer of all time. Three other books, The Man Who Rode Into Midnight, Town: The Time It Never Rained, and The Good Old Boys have all won Western Heritage Awards.
the good old boys was adapted into a 1995 American western adventure film of the same name. The film featured Tommy Lee Jones and Sissy Spacek and was produced by Edgar J. scherick associates.
kelton received the owen wister award in 1977 for lifetime achievement. The author was working on another novel but developed several health problems during the spring of 2009. The book was not complete before his death on August 22, 2009.

the time that never rained is a novel set in west texas and inspired by true events when a severe drought that remains forever in the memory of many ranchers and farmers pushed them to the limit of their endurance and courage. Kelton, the author of the book, was there not as a rancher but as an agricultural journalist. he covered this state of complete emptiness on a daily basis and was familiar with what it meant for the residents who were forced to deal with its dire manifestations.

The protagonist of this novel is Charlie Flagg, a broad-shouldered man who dug holes for posts, carried his sacks, and flanked his calves. His ranch was medium-sized and consisted of 15 sections, he owned three sections and leased the rest. Unlike other ranchers, who often accepted government help during the drought, Charlie couldn’t accept it. he often described that when a man accepts help from the government, it is like selling freedom.

for hewey calloway, he faces a problem in his 1906 west texas home. the landscape and way of life he loves are rapidly changing for his liking. he only dreams of freedom and wants to be a cowboy on horseback roaming the open land. unfortunately, the open pasture of his childhood is disappearing too fast. the land on which he should roam will soon be parceled out and barbed wire fences will be installed everywhere. furthermore, to his disappointment, cars and more machines are taking over his simple cowboy life, making the whole land stink and also threatening to take the place of horseback riding. As the dreamer struggles against the endless stream of progress, he comes to realize that his simple childhood life is gone and that a man cannot live a life that time has forgotten and that every choice he makes requires a sacrifice.
kelton did a great job on good old boys; you won’t find any unexpected plot twists or some fiery firefights. although there is some aspect of romance, the books primarily emphasize friendship, love, determination, sacrifice, and integrity. It’s a good story of the 20th century where ranchers and peasants fought, water was good and land was scarce, and when cars invaded the land of horses.
the day the cowboys left
It’s the year 1883 in Texas when cowboys refuse to be condemned as alcoholics and exploited by rich ranchers who don’t pay them good wages. ranchers are also determined to take away the rights to own cattle from cowboys, as ranchers believe that would lead to theft. in 1883, a decree is established that if you are a cowboy, you cannot have a cow. however, when rumors of such an order travel from one wagon to another, the cowboy decides to band together and fight for his rights to own cattle, so they meet up and attack.
