English 4 introduces students to the wealth, breadth and beauty of English literature by contextualizing some of Britain’s works within the question “How does one live well in a fallen world?” as well as the question “How does literature communicate about the nature of the world in both a true and beautiful way?” The range of books shows the existence of the fallen world, the reality of grace, the depravity of man, and the need for virtue within different time periods.

The course begins by introducing students to the Inklings, a group of devoted Christians living and writing in the twentieth century. Using the Inklings as a backdrop, the course then moves chronologically through the major movements in British literature: Old English, medieval, early-modern, seventeenth-century, Romantic, Victorian, modern and contemporary literature. It also does genre work on the Shakespearian play, the novel, essays, children’s literature, and poetry throughout the centuries. 

Giving students the tools to critically engage texts on their own is an essential motivator behind the assignments in this curriculum. As such, students will learn to generate interesting theses and questions, write defensible argumentative essays, and turn argumentative essays into compelling verbal presentations. 

The course focuses heavily on reading, argumentative writing, poetry immersion, creative opportunities, and discussion to allow students the freedom to engage the texts. 

We estimate that the course workload will take 5-7 hours per week.

During a typical week in this course, students will complete the following coursework:

60–90 minutes of live class instruction~80 pages of readingWeekly discussion with fellow studentsReading quizzes every couple of weeksPoetry, rhetorical device, and devotional assignments in rotating sequencesSome aspect of the writing process

Throughout the year, students will also complete the following tasks:

Periodic video lectures introducing major literary movements, ideas, texts, or instructions (10–15 minutes per lecture)2 argumentative essays (1,000–1,200 words)Short story and creative poemIn-class, argumentative presentation (6-8 minutes)Final exam at the end of each semester

This is a high school level course, targeted at the 12th grade year, and is designed to further students’ love for literature by allowing them to take ownership of their ideas. It is designed to challenge students. This class is ideal for students who want to think deeply about how his or her faith is informed by texts that shaped culture. It will be an enriching final high school literature course for students willing to invest in critical engagement via reading, writing, and thinking. It is recommened that students be in a place of emotional maturity before delving into the literature of this course.

It is also for students who want to join an online, collaborative community of learners interested in engaging and challenging each other to be better thinkers. 

It is expected that students taking this course will have an excellent grasp of grammar, will be familiar with MLA formatting, can successfully defend a thesis, can read critically, and will be self-motivated. It is also expected that students will be timely in submitting assignments. Students who successfully completed English 3 will be well prepared for this course. 

Finally, it is expected that students engage their peers and teachers with a Christlike attitude and that they address difficult topics with maturity and sensitivity.  

In every phebinhvanhoc.com.vn/en phebinhvanhoc.com.vn/en course, students meet weekly with their instructor and classmates in an online classroom for additional teaching, discussion, Q&A, or group activities. The class sessions are interactive and are conducted using a web meeting software with video, audio, chat, and application sharing capabilities.

Scheduled, real-time sessions in the online classroom are not the only form of instruction available in a phebinhvanhoc.com.vn/en Online phebinhvanhoc.com.vn/en course, but are offered in addition to lectures or other instructional materials that students are able to access online at their convenience.

When they register, students will need to select a particular class section and live class meeting time. Additional class sections may be added to the schedule at a later point in the course registration period. Registered students will be notified of any changes to the live session schedule.

All live class sessions are recorded for later viewing. While it is recommended that students attend each live class session, students can make arrangements to watch the recordings and receive full participation credit.
