but the people at the nearby table didn’t know eric, so they immediately informed the police who investigated the matter and then encouraged eric to avoid that kind of conversation, if only for the sake of the people around him. they did not know knows his particular sense of humor.
but that was always eric rickstad. he loves to tell stories. the habit hit him when he was still a child. Back then, he was obsessed with the likes of Roald Dahl and Stephen King.
He couldn’t believe that stories like “night shift” could evoke so many emotions in him. and that pushed him to start dreaming of a future where he, too, would tell those stories and evoke emotions in such a powerful way.
Interestingly, most critics agree that Eric Rickstad’s most powerful gift is his ability to arouse sad and tragic emotions in his readers. he seems to have cracked the literary code of making people feel sad and terrified through the use of words. So clearly the author achieved his dream.
As an aspiring author, Eric was initially content to think and tell stories. It was in her high school cafeteria that the author started talking about shooting skiers during their deer hunting trip.

eric thinks that calling his mother at school to talk about his state of mind, the result of a poem he wrote about family members killing each other during the holidays, would have stunted his imagination.
eric is glad he was allowed to experiment with the darkest aspects of his consciousness. The author attended the University of Vermont, majoring in English. he also got a grape master’s degree.
as an adult and professional, eric rickstad began writing short stories and poems. novels were hardly a thought in the author’s brain. But because he loved to write and always found time to write every day, regardless of the time available, it became the norm for Eric to produce short stories.
eric’s entry into the publishing field was unintentional, at least not during those early stages. Eric set out to write a short story. he wrote 45 pages and then realized that he hadn’t even begun to scratch the surface of the plot or the characters.
I knew the story would have to last a little longer than I was used to. but it wasn’t until he turned in a few dozen extra pages that he realized he had the potential for a novel on his hands.
It was from that experience that ‘harvest’, eric rickstad’s first novel, was born. With one novel finished, Eric knew he’d want to write another very soon, so he started digging, dipping his toes into new literary waters until he stumbled upon a couple of ideas he thought were worth exploring.
Eric is driven to write by outrage. sees political or social injustices and feels compelled to address them in a story. Eric is especially infuriated by stories of criminals continuing to commit violent crimes like rape and assault on women because the justice system repeatedly sentences them to prison only to get them released on technicalities.
eric doesn’t think his stories would be as moving and heartbreaking if they didn’t come from a place of anger and outrage at the political and social injustice he sees in the world.
The Silent Girls, Eric’s most popular novel, is part of the Canaan crime series, which is also the author’s most popular book collection.
