She attended UCLA and received a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and later a doctorate in dentistry, although she never practiced dentistry. Rina, who is Orthodox Jewish, now works as a teacher at the yeshiva community Buried in Los Angeles. samuel and jacob have 8 and 7 respectively. one night, she discovers the rape and murder after the mikveh, a bath used for the purpose of ritual immersion in Judaism. peter decker is a policeman called to the scene. Decker is a smart and dedicated cop. he is also a war veteran. he suspects that the mikveh night rape may be related to his ongoing rape case at the foot of the hill. however, the Jewish community does not cooperate with the outsider.
but rina lazarus is different. Soon, they are attracted to each other. Little by little, Peter has reason to believe that the real target is Rina herself. the second book in the peter deker/rina lazarus series is sacred and profane which was published in 1987, about six months after the ritual bath. Peter Dekker is assigned to the burned and buried skeletons that Samuel (Rina’s son) finds during the camping trip.
He works on the case and, as a result, interferes with his study of the talmud at the yelshiva. At the end of the book, Rina moves to New York, leaving Peter at hers to decide if she wants to continue the journey into Judaism.
for the third book, milk and honey, published in 1990, it comes 18 months after sacred and profane. the two main characters are getting closer to being together. faye touched a bit on the disturbing bitterness peter has as a war veteran. For the spin-off, Kellerman introduced rookie Cynthia Decker, the stalker where she becomes a cop against her father’s (Peter Decker) wishes. but cindy is determined and fierce.
the peter decker/rina lazarus series are new york times best sellers because they have both the human side and the forensic side. all loose ends are tied up. As time goes on, Kellerman allows each character to develop and develop. it has been noted that there is a Jewish theme embedded throughout. some readers find that it is not necessary to paint the main characters to make them look very attractive because the series was never written in a way that could become romance novels. since 1986, there have been 21 books in this lapd crime solving team series.
