9. ‘salem’s lot’ first signed edition – $3,168.75
According to the description, not many hands have touched this one as it has been sitting in the same house for a quarter of a century. Plus, it’s one of those rare books that has a mistake, and we all know that mistakes mean big bucks when it comes to collectibles: “This is the second issue dust jacket, very scarce due to Father Cody’s mistake on the front flap ( later corrected in the third issue for father callahan) whose price was slashed by doubleday and revalued at $7.95 printed next to the publisher’s clip the book has the required q37 code (to be a real first printing) on the bottom end from the middle of the last page of text”.

8. ‘the stand’ 1st signed edition — $3,840
Reading the description of this one, it looks like someone bought it, or received it as a gift, and hid it until now. in mint condition, basically, and that means a lot in the world of books. it is also signed and dedicated, which always adds to the value. I know how easy it is to ruin a dust jacket, so I’d love to see this one.

7. signed first edition of ‘dark tower: the gunslinger’: $4500
dark tower books are expensive, especially signed first editions and complete sets in mint condition. however, the first book in the series is one of a kind. this signed copy, for example, is as expensive as some complete sets that are not as special or in excellent condition. no matter what people think of the movie, the dark tower books will surely continue to rise in price over the years, so get this one now and maybe you can sell it and retire in twenty years.

6. ‘the eyes of the dragon’ signed/limited/personalized copy — $4500
the story behind this is great, so I’ll just copy the description offered by abebooks:
folio, illustrations by kenneth r. linkhauser, cloth backed boards. 1276 printed copies of which this is one of 250 numbered copies in red ink set aside for private distribution by the king. this is copy number 77. this copy has a presentation inscription signed by the king on the title page. “to michelle slung – / with best wishes – hope you have a happy holiday season. also hope you like this little story. keep it up, /steve king/12/6/84/.” “p.s.-tabby says hello, and yes-my mother really did/she said all those things. /s.k./”. Attached to this copy is a three-page handwritten note signed by the King to Michele posted on small (4″ x 6″) paper. The content of the note refers to Michele Slung’s upcoming Momilies® book, with some King offerings of sayings from his mother and a promise to provide a photo of his mother when he returns to Maine. a warm personal note to a friend and colleague. the p.d. Here in the book it refers to sayings used in Momilies®, Michele Slung’s collection of wit, wisdom, and other sayings from mothers. Michele Slung is also an editor and literary critic, she published the Stephen King story “The ‘Becka Paulson Revelations” in Ella’s anthology I Shudder at Your Touch.

5. limited/signed edition of ‘my pretty pony’ with digital watch and personalized box: $4950
instead of a regular or boutique press, this one was published by the whitney museum of american art. The book contains illustrations by artist Barbara Kruger and is signed by both the artist and the author. The book is bound in stainless steel (we editors need more) with a red leather spine and has a digital clock mounted on the aluminum front panel. It also comes with an instruction booklet on how to change the battery and keep the metal looking like new. only 280 copies were published, and only 150 of them went on sale. if you buy it, i want to touch it, so let me know.

4. ‘carrrie’ signed the first edition: $7500
another that claims to be in good condition. signed and sporting a “vibrant color, no fading, chipping, or missing parts” dust jacket. it stayed that way because whoever had it made a custom collector’s case for it. signed someone in omaha.

3. ‘the plant’ signed first edition set: $14,000
What determines the value of a book? a series of elements. in this case, the rarity, age, signature, dedication, and even the odd differences between the three books add up to 14k. here is the description: “bangor, maine: philtrum press, 1982, 1983, 1985. first, limited, and single editions: numbers 138, 130, and 122, respectively, of 200 numbered copies printed (of total editions of 226 copies each) 8vo 32, 36, 56 pp. all three volumes bound in stiff green printed wrappers, parts one and two sewn together, part three perfectly bound all three volumes written with warmth and charm at the same time by the king to his publisher (Viking) then- director of sales and marketing. a good group”. a good set indeed. a little pricey for me but go ahead and get it.

2. ‘the dark tower’ 1st edition signed by donald m. grant — $23,500
donald m. 1982 grant editions are expensive in any form you can find them. this is for a complete set that is signed and in mint condition. individual books also bring in quite a bit of money if they’re signed or in mint condition, but I haven’t been able to find a complete set that isn’t in five figures. hey, maybe the movie sucks, but the books are much, much better, so get on with it.

Also known as the Asbestos Initiator, this was published in 1980 and there are only 26 lettered copies in the world. ironically, one is rumored to have been lost in a fire. In any case, this is the only time in my life that I wished I had asbestos in my house.
