who is penn cage / summary of the series

penn cage was a prosecutor in houston, texas. He is the current Mayor of Natchez, Mississippi and also a writer. After his wife, Sarah, died, he decided to return home to Natchez to deal with his grief and help his daughter, Annie, recover from the loss of her mother as well.

the quiet game

after returning home with his daughter, penn cage learns that her father is being blackmailed, so he gets involved in the case. all of this goes back to a racial case from 30 years ago in 1968 of a black citizen. Here he also meets Livy Marston, his former love whom he never thought he would meet again. The more Cage investigates, the more people try to keep some secrets hidden forever, even secrets the FBI was involved with in the past.

The book is a prequel to Natchez Burning and as such can be read on its own. in fact, it’s best to read the entire penn cage series in order.

By now Penn Cage has won his main case from the first book, and has now decided to stay in his hometown where his daughter can grow up in peace. However, things are not going to be peaceful when the body of a high school student is found and his best friend, Draw Elliott, asks Cage to help him with the case, especially since he is accused of the crime. .

It seems that natchez has a problem with the game, and penn cage should solve it if he can. Instead, she is tasked with helping bring back to town a luxurious new gaming ship, the Queen Magnolia. But when a connected friend who presented him with evidence about the dangerous gambling situation has been murdered, Cage knows the stakes have been raised because now even his own family is in danger. His only allies in this war are his ex-lover, his father, and some trusted friends.

The Factory of Death is a short story that ties together the first two books and the upcoming Natchez Burning trilogy. cage is still in houston and his father calls him, he is on his death bed due to a heart attack and has a secret to share. when he returns home, his father is better and has apparently forgotten the secret, saying that there is nothing to say. the story happens before natchez burns down.

The fourth Penn Cage book and the first in the Natchez Burning trilogy, takes Cage on a quest to save his father, who has been accused of killing a former colleague and nurse, Viola Turner. cage knows that his father is innocent, however, he is not talking. And in order to save his father from him, Penn Cage needs to know what really happened on that fateful day Viola died.

The book is a direct sequel to Natchez Burning, after Penn’s father became a fugitive from the law. Now his family is in tatters, and it’s up to Penn to try to find his father and figure out what’s going on. however, in the process, she has stirred something up with a powerful dark group called the double-headed eagle, which has its origins in the kkk. The more Penn investigates, the more she realizes that Viola’s death was nothing more than simple, and that her father could be nothing more than a pawn in the hands of some very powerful figures from the past.

Mississippi blood

The final book in the Natchez Burning trilogy finds Penn almost heartbroken that he has lost everything that mattered to him. now his father is on trial and the woman he loves is gone. worse, his father doesn’t want help and he doesn’t want to help himself. Unless Penn Cage can find the means to prove his father’s innocence, all is lost forever.

biography of greg iles

Greg Iles was born in 1960, in Stuttgart, Germany. At the time, his father was a physician working at the U.S. Embassy Medical Clinic which he was a head of during the times of the Cold War. His mother was a teacher who constantly instilled in him the love for creativity. After the family moved back in 1963 to the US, Greg grew up in Natchez, Mississippi, which is the setting of several of the author’s novels, including the Penn Cage series. He attended Trinity Episcopal Day School, and then he enrolled at the University of Mississippi, from where he graduated in 1983 with a degree in English literature. Initially, he enrolled in pre-med, but at some point he realized being a doctor is not what he wanted. So he phoned his dad and told him he would not be following in his footsteps.

greg iles didn’t start out as a writer right away. After college, he became a vocalist, guitarist, and also a songwriter for a band he was in called Frankly Scarlet. he got married in 1989, and a year later, in 1990, after a disagreement with the band, he decided that constant touring away from home was not suitable for married life.

around this time he began to spend more time writing. basically, she decided to put in as many hours a day as it takes to write her first book in a year. this often turned out to be 18 of you writing in a single day.

Just a few years later, in 1993, his first novel, Spandau Phoenix, featuring Nazi war criminal Rudolf Hess, was published. The book, a historical thriller, was an instant hit and a New York Times bestseller. I remember reading it on his day too, and I was hooked.

The author’s second book, also set in World War II, Black Cross, was published just two years later. This book also became a New York Times bestseller, and John Grisham nominated Greg Iles for this book, which became the Mississippi Author of Fiction Award for the author.

By now, if some readers haven’t heard of author Greg Iles yet, his book 24 Hours, published in 2000, made sure everyone did. The book was made into a movie titled Trapped, starring Charlize Theron, Courtney Love, Stuart Townsend, Kevin Bacon, Dakota Fanning, and Vince Taylor Pruitt. for the movie, the author also wrote the original script which was also titled Trapped. As interesting trivia, Greg Iles wrote 24 hours in a week when he was home sick with the flu.

In 2011, Greg Iles was in a serious car accident that changed the course of his entire life. part of his serious injuries caused him to lose part of his right leg below the knee. the injuries required him to be placed in a medically induced coma for 8 days. During his recovery time, he wrote three novels that eventually became the beginning of the Penn Cage series, which is still ongoing. After her divorce from him in 2014, shortly after recovering from the accident, he got engaged and married later that year.

Over the years, Greg Iles has written close to 20 books, and while writing is very important to him, he also returned to his first love, music, which he practices in his spare time. In this effort, he is part of the remnants of Rock Bottom, an American rock charity supergroup that includes numerous writers and journalists who are also musicians. Group members also include Stephen King, Amy Tan, Dave Berry, Ridley Pearson, Barbara Kingsolver, and many others. the band plays about a dozen concerts each year with the goal of raising funds for children’s literacy programs.
