herman wouk is a Jewish American author, born on May 27, 1915 and his genres include religion & amp; spirituality, historical fiction and literature & fiction. He is a Pulitzer Prize-winning and best-selling author. Notable works by him include War and Remembrance, The Winds of War, The Caine Mutiny, etc. His family came to the United States from Russia and he was born in New York. he was in the bronx for most of his childhood and adolescence and from townsend harris high school earned his certificate of high school diploma. In 1934, from Columbia University, he earned his B. a degree and was a student of irwin edman, a philosopher. he was also a member of the pi lambda phi fraternity. Shortly thereafter, he was working on Joke Factory as a radio playwright with David Freedman and later for five years with Fred Allen. He began writing radio spots for the US government in 1941, in order to sell war bonds. At the age of 20, his life was quite secular, but then he changed his lifestyle to the Jewish way, following the path of his grandfather.

wouk later joined the united states navy and the pacific theater is where he served. According to him, this was the place where he learned about the behavior of men who work under pressure, about machinery and about Americans. USS Southard and USS Zane were the two DMS (Destroyer Minesweeper) where Wouk served as an officer and later became the Executive Officer of USS Southard. When he was off duty, he started writing a novel called ‘Aurora Dawn’. Wouk took the copy of the opening chapter and sent it to the philosopher Irwin Edman, and through him it found its way to a New York publisher. The result of this was that the publisher sent a letter of engagement to his ship, which was then off the coast of Okinawa. in 1947 his novel was published and soon became the top selection of the book-of-the-month club. in 1948, City Boy, his second novel was published and was a commercial failure. During the time Herman Wouk was writing his next novel, he used to enlist the help of his wife and read each chapter to her. His wife at the time commented that he should change his line of work if this doesn’t work.

in 1951 the novel ‘el mutiny de la caña’ was published and the result was that it won the pulitzer prize. She used his experience as a minesweeper during his service in World War II to write Cain’s Mutiny and it became a best-seller. Caine’s Mutiny Court Martial is the name of the Broadway play adapted by the author and later used to make a movie. the role of lt. Despite all these complaints, Captain Queeg is now one of the best characters in American fiction. in 1945 he married betty sarah brown and abraham, nathanial and joseph are the three children they had. to support his growing family he became a full time writer in the year 1946. abraham isaac wouk his eldest son died as a child in a tragic accident and later in 1978 he wrote ‘war and remembrance’ to dedicate him and used the words “he will destroy death forever” from the bible. The Zion Guardian Award was given to Herman Wouk in the year 1998 and he is still alive and living in the state of California.

among the novels that wouk has written, the caine mutiny is one of the first and was published by back bay books in 1951. the story is told by a young man named willis seward keith, also known as willie, who ends up to sign up for the United States Navy Midshipman School to escape the recruitment process by the Army at the time of World War II. he has to go through many tribulations as he has some relationship conflicts with his mother and with the daughter of an Italian immigrant. her name is may wynn and she is a nightclub singer with beautiful red hair. she barely survives in midshipman school, earning demerits of the highest number. He is soon commissioned and assigned to the USS Caine, which is a World War I destroyer minesweeper. He soon meets Captain Francis Queen and Willie begins to take responsibility for him. The novel won the Pulitzer Prize in 1952 and was a bestseller. The novel was adapted for a Broadway play and also for a film.

Another great book by Herman Wouk is ‘The Winds of War’ which was published on January 1, 1971 by Back Bay Books. is one of the greatest masterpieces of historical fiction and consists of two parts. the story is told by the henry family of america and is about the second world war. the novel tells about all the political and military situations during a war along with the complete background. The situation on the battlefield and around America and Europe is deeply explained in a comprehensive manner. The book ends at Pearl Harbor and continues with a second book titled ‘War and Remembrance’. Wouk started working on the novel in 1958 and after a lot of research, writing, and thinking, it was published in the year 1971, which took thirteen years. There are many recent books published about the second world war, but none of them are as realistic as the winds of war, since it was written closer to the time of the war and by a veteran of the war. In 1983 a TV miniseries based on The Winds of War starring Robert Mitchum was made and it was a great success. the second part was also the same and was adapted for a tv miniseries in 1988.
